What pisses me off about these people is that their gripe with fuel costs, which by the way is extortionate here in Ireland, isn't about taking a stand at a social level to try and introduce better government at a state and rural passage. It's not even about their care for fellow humans. It's just personal and they all happen to be affected by the same issue. None of these protesters will be campaigning for the end of fossil fuels and would be the first to run over #StopOil protesters.

Shandon Above the Shopfronts

Cork’s Pope Quay packs more character into two hundred metres than most cities manage in a mile. I was standing on the south bank with the River Lee between us, drawn initially by the sweep of that pedestrian footbridge. It’s a cl...

The Bookshop Pigeon

A pigeon had taken up residence in the Dubray Books window on St. Patrick Street, wedged comfortably between Michael Palin and a Lonely Planet guide which is frankly better taste in travel literature than most of us manage. It sat there among the carefully arrang...

This Car Is Protected by Fluff

A Hyundai sat brazenly on the double yellows outside Dunnes on Drawbridge Street, and behind the wheel, well, behind the steering wheel at least, sat this absolute unit of a security detail. B...

One of my neighbours is a fisherman and has effectively domesticated this guy by regularly feeding him fish scraps.

It makes him very easy to photograph. Especially with Storm Dave providing some wind to give a bit of an artistic ruffle to his feathers and head plume.

When the Atlantic Catches Fire

A golden sunrise at Cappagh Beach, County Kerry, with warm light spilling across choppy Atlantic waters and silhouetting dark rocky outcrops in the foreground, while layered mountain ridges fade into haze and mist under dramatic clouds.
The cold at Cappagh Beach the morning I made this photo was the sort that makes you question every life choice that led you to a dark car park before dawn. The sunrise wasn’t that great but shortly before we left, the sun cracked through a gap in the cloud and turned the entire Atlantic into molten gold, and suddenly the cold didn’t matter much.

I love how the backlight picks out a single breaking wave on the rocks mid-frame, giving the whole scene a focal point that isn’t the sun itself. Kerry mornings like this are why alarm clocks exist.

The Invisible Shift

A street cleaner with a bin bag in one hand, framed between a STOP sign and a no-right-turn sign. You couldn’t stage it better. I shot this from Drawbridge Street, watching the lunchtime crowd flow past him like water around a rock. What struck me was the contrast: dozens of...
