Pretty amazing work by Yi Zhe Ang - "Art in Transit" yizhe-ang.github.io/art-in-tra…

Interesting use of the map's renderer as the zoomable "canvas" for images 👏

I'm glad someone in mainstream Singapore media is talking about this:

The migrant workers who literally build and clean Singapore have to deal with conditions nobody else would accept, and they do not have leverage or rights or very much support

We have a three-tier immigration system: at the very bottom, work permit holders, people in construction and domestic labour.

A Sunda Colugo (Galeopterus variegatus) spotted at Windsor Nature Park, Singapore on 12 April 2026. An active fellow, it started grooming itself, then turned to gaze curiously at the humans taking photos of it. 🙂

Colugos can glide huge distances between trees using a gliding membrane, (patagium) that stretches between their limbs.

Apparently the kindergarten that everyone in my family went to is closing next year. Their total enrolment this year: six.

Related, Teo You Yenn has a new book on parenting in Singapore: Unease.

"In societies where there are dominant, sometimes overpowering, stories, there are also gaps: between idealised, overly stylised tales and ordinary, messy lived realities.”

“In this book, I explore the gap between the idealised Singapore family and the realities inside family lives. Here, the story of Singapore families blossoms and bloats: the truth of the matter is that ‘family’ stands at the core of Singaporean culture, but truth be told the family is experienced as stressful and increasingly burdensome. The education system for children is excellent, but it is also hard to find one parent or child happy in it.”

"te cargo was transiting through Singapore en route from #Indonesia to #Cambodia.. Pangolins are among te world’s most #endangered species & their scales are prized in countries like #China & #Vietnam where they're used in #traditional #medicine as remedy for various ailments. Their scales are similar in constitution to fingernails & provide no scientifically proven medicinal benefit"

A female Ornate Sunbird (Cinnyris ornatus) spotted in the garden, Singapore on 31 March 2025. It returned many times to pull threads from this padding on the tree, probably to use as nesting material.

A very common urban bird, with high-pitched cheeps announcing its presence.

A Rufous Woodpecker (Micropternus brachyurus) spotted at Coney Island, Singapore on 30 March 2025. A common resident, but one which I don't often see.

"A microforest blooming outside City Square Mall in Little India has been expanded, after a study showed that the green refuge can help lower temperatures by up to 5 deg C compared with the surrounding urban areas, while also providing a home for native wildlife."

"A video of six otters facing off against a crocodile many times their size in the waters of the Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve caught the attention of Facebook users on March 22.
[…]
Despite its superior size, the crocodile eventually retreats, slowly backing away from the group and disappearing into the murky waters, leaving the victorious semi-aquatic animals free to roam the area."

A large Spider Wasp (family Pompilidae) spotted at Coney Island on 30 March 2025. It has apparently paralysed this Dome Web Spider (Cyrtophora moluccensis) and may be preparing a nesting hole. It kept flying around the vicinity and returning to the spider.

The Red Edge (Semanga superba) spotted at Lornie Park Connector, Singapore on 22 March 2026. A lovely, uncommon butterfly with an unmistakable red edge on its hindwings, hence its common name. I haven't seen it for several years.
