Freshly updated: my AS201379 page.

IPv6-only, FreeBSD + FRR, 2a06:9801:1c::/48.

Now with an at-a-glance table (ASN, AS-SET, contacts), full upstream list and new EVIX alongside LocIX Düsseldorf and FogIXP.

Peering policy is open. If we share a presence at any of those three, I'd love to peer: peering@hofstede.it

I really don’t need any more peers for my AS201379! (Okay, maybe a few more...)

Started back in December 2025, and now this "little" infrastructure is running:

14 individual eBGP sessions
3 Internet Exchanges
Multiple transit providers
110+ direct peers

All 100% IPv6 (2a06:9801:1c::/48) because legacy IP belongs in the last century.

Powered entirely by FreeBSD :freebsd: : 4 routers on 15.1-RELEASE running FRR and PF.

#BGP #IPv6 #FreeBSD #Routing #Networking #sysadmin

AS201379, part 5: joined EVIX (an IXP whose fabric is VXLAN tunnels, so no port and no new machine), got IPv4 onto an IPv6-only network, and cleaned up four routers' worth of config drift.

Fourteen BGP sessions, all FreeBSD, all still fitting on one Grafana screen.

From the engine room: Today, I updated our entire Mastodon infrastructure for burningboard.net to FreeBSD 15.1-RELEASE-p1 :freebsd: and applied all quarterly package updates. This included the Mastodon App-Server, the opensearch cluster and the Grafana monitoring stack.

Also applied the Mastodon 4.6.4 update and did some cleanup (postgresql repack, removal of orphaned media files, search index rebuild, etc).

All looking perfectly stable and healthy: status.burningboard.net 😀

How does the FreeBSD Foundation Board fit into the broader FreeBSD ecosystem?

Following our annual meeting and Board elections at BSDCan, we’re taking a closer look at the role of the FreeBSD Foundation Board and how it differs from that of Foundation staff and FreeBSD Project leadership.

Contemplating transitioning off Linux to #FreeBSD or #NetBSD but worried about #accessibility. Does anyone have experience of using #braille displays with the BSDs?

I think BRLTTY claims to run on those platforms, but I have found FreeBSD documentation disclaiming support for braille devices, but perhaps this is outdated.

any experience/suggestions for an arm64 server, best if it runs #FreeBSD and #BHyve and is available in Europe.

EDIT: I'm interested in buying a server, not renting...

If I can't trust that the #Linux kernel won't be slop-free, looks like it's time to consider #BSD for the first time in three decades or so.
Therefore, I'm going to need some input.

New to FreeBSD? Choosing the right installation image is a great place to start.

A member of the FreeBSD community recently shared a helpful walkthrough explaining the different FreeBSD installation images and when to use each one, including:
• DVD images
• Boot-only (network install)
• USB memory stick images

FreeBSD 15 + CDE is probably the closest you can get to sitting in front of a high-end UNIX workstation without owning a time machine.

Running Common Desktop Environment in 2026 feels strangely refreshing. No blur effects, no Electron, no notifications fighting for attention, No ai written code, just Motif, terminals, man pages, and a desktop paradigm that was already mature before I was born.

Current setup: • FreeBSD 15.0-RELEASE • CDE • dtwm • bhyve • Motif everywhere

Today’s activity: reading bhyve(4) manuals and pretending I'm a UNIX admin in 1996.

New post: Monitoring our FreeBSD Mastodon instance.

burningboard.net runs as a stack of Bastille jails on FreeBSD, so I watch it from a separate box with Prometheus, Grafana and Loki. The interesting part is the FreeBSD-shaped gaps: no native ZFS metrics, nothing for the Mastodon API or our S3 media bucket. A small textfile collector fills all of it.

This is how I keep an eye on the very instance I'm writing this on:

From the engine room: Built a new overview dashboard for our Mastodon instance burningboard.net with all the important stats:

- System overview
- Sidekiq statistics
- Database health
- S3 Bucket utilization
- Mastodon statistics

Starting to look really good and helpful 😀

Our Mastodon instance "burningboard.net" is now running on the newly released FreeBSD 15.1-RELEASE :freebsd:

Everything looking fine. No unpleasant surprises. Upgrade process went completely smooth!

Our Stack now:

OS: FreeBSD 15.1-RELASE with Bastille
Mastodon: 4.6.0-rc.2
DB: PostgreSQL 18.4 / Valkey 9.0.3

FreeBSD 15.1-RELEASE has been officially released.

Notable changes include Linux v7.0-based wireless drivers, Unicode 17.0 support, C23 language progress, cloud image improvements, and boot-time kernel scheduler selection.

A well-rounded update that improves hardware support, cloud deployments, and developer tooling.

Database cleanup work:

$ psql -c "SELECT pg_size_pretty(pg_database_size('mastodon'))"
pg_size_pretty
----------------
38 GB
(1 row)

$ pg_repack mastodon
INFO: repacking table "public.account_aliases"
....

$ psql -c "SELECT pg_size_pretty(pg_database_size('mastodon'))"
pg_size_pretty
----------------
32 GB

Nice 😀 Another successful maintanance ! Also patched up the entire machine and all jails to FreeBSD 15.0-RELEASE-p10 and verified our backups work and are restorable.

Finally! The upgraded adaptive #filesystem I have been looking for. Abstracted from #FreeBSD, #linuxbased, #MacOS, #iOS, and #Windows OSes.

This layout should be sufficient to simplify the app packaging process making the entire production pipeline clean and tidy.

Enjoy!

so some things I've converted, some for decades (like Windows for Linux, and like @thorstenzoeller I've recently started trying out #FreeBSD). Outlook/Gmail for Tuta/Protonmail, ongoing. WhatsApp for Signal/Meshtastic/undecided, but currently required for work at least. GCalendar for DecSync w/ Syncthing. Bitwarden for KeePass atm. And Google Search for Brave Search.

I want to get a hostname for my email, so I can change backend in a whim.

I am assisting an educational podcast project doing the sysadmin for them. Happy that I was able to advocate for #BSD. We went with httpd(8) #OpenBSD for this, in the end it is just the feed.xml and some MP3/M4A-files. So exactly what the web is for. However, #Apple refuses the feed saying httpd does not support byte-ranges. Looking at the change logs, it should be supported since 5.8 (openbsd.org/plus58.html). And testing all this with curl does return a 206 and provides me with a working chunk of data. What am I missing here? #NetBSD #FreeBSD #smallweb #podcast #podcasts

Updated the burningboard.net Mastodon server to FreeBSD 15.0-RELEASE-p9. There were quite some vulnerabilities among the latest patches ... ptrace, file, fusefs, bsdinstall, cap_net, secretd...

The #freebsd experiment continues as I try to make a proper useful workstation out of it.

I've got video and sound and internet working. But while I work, I need some music.

Maybe I'll install the #spotify app? Nope.. not on BSD.

No problem, I"ll use the web based player.. Also NO apparently as you can't enable #drm in firefox in #bsd ?

Is this true or am I missing something? I'm trying to go pure BSD and not use Linux compatibility. But doesn't seem possible?

My AS201379 / 2a06:9801:1c::/48 has some really solid European connectivity now.

New post: Joining DN42. The parallel hobbyist BGP network on WireGuard.

The setup: ASN registered via a git PR, MikroTik CHR on bhyve as border, three WireGuard peerings, FreeBSD jail running PowerDNS + nginx.

The fun part: blog.chofstede.dn42 serves the same content as blog.hofstede.it, but with a TLS cert signed by DN42's own CA and zero packets on the public internet. Two front doors to the same building.
