I'm a ~30 years Sysadmin/DevOps/Server Shepard/Graybeard whatever its called now UNIX nerd.

Looking for work doing UNIX'y stuff. I mostly do automation, and have avoided working with AI and Kubernetes (though I have a bit of k8s experience at two jobs, I just prefer "the old way")

Chef, Puppet, Cfengine, Ansible, Shell scripts, etc.

I've built Linux distributions, and automation tools. Having worked at Redhat, TurboLinux, Penguin Computing, Salesforce, and Chef.

Built and maintained monitoring systems, checks, and lived the on-call life.

Built and managed CI systems, and Pipelines.

I've written and maintained software in Ruby, Python, and Shell. I've dabbled in just about every other programming language you'll find on a UNIX system.

I have spent a lot of time with *BSD, Solaris, IRIX, and Linux, and to a lesser extent HPUX, and AIX.

If its sysadmin work on a UNIX, I've likely done it.

Any #Plan9 or #9front expert on fedi? I heard a lot about it and few days ago when I spotted a new release of the 9front and there was #qcow2 #QEMU images, I started to look at it. However I never get the #rio #GUI session to work. I am starting the #VM by:

If I can't trust that the #Linux kernel won't be slop-free, looks like it's time to consider #BSD for the first time in three decades or so.
Therefore, I'm going to need some input.
Advice on which BSD for desktop use.
Will I be screwed in terms of gaming (my laptop has a 5070) via Steam/wine/Proton?

FreeBSD 15 + CDE is probably the closest you can get to sitting in front of a high-end UNIX workstation without owning a time machine.

Running Common Desktop Environment in 2026 feels strangely refreshing. No blur effects, no Electron, no notifications fighting for attention, No ai written code, just Motif, terminals, man pages, and a desktop paradigm that was already mature before I was born.

Current setup: • FreeBSD 15.0-RELEASE • CDE • dtwm • bhyve • Motif everywhere

Today’s activity: reading bhyve(4) manuals and pretending I'm a UNIX admin in 1996.

Gotta keep Firefox/Mozilla even if it is going downhill fast. Vivaldi and Firefox + variants are the only browsers I will use or recommend. Hopefully, we can steer Firefox and Chromium in the right direction before it is too late.

Did quite some maintenance on burningboard.net Mastodon instance today ..

Updated servers and jails to FreeBSD 15.0-RELEASE-p5

1.
proxy_cache_path (S3 media cache) was already on a ZFS dataset with autosnapshot disabled .. But proxy_temp_path and client_body_temp_path (both nginx temp folders) weren't. Leading to extremely bloated daily ZFS snapshots for the Nginx jail. Changed those and cleaned old snapshots -> 31GB reclaimed space

2.
Cleaned up Database Snapshots and did a pg_repack on prod to reclaim deleted database pages -> 3GB reclaimed space

3.
Fixed issue with backend path over gif tunnel to Elasticsearch (6in6). Turned out to be a MSS issue (clamp-mss to 1140 on the tunnel iface solved it!)

4.
Fixed IPv6 routing issue for Prometheus Monitoring after reboot (rc.d static_routes != ipv6_static_routes)

All in all, our instance is in very good shape again 😀

Finally, I managed to install and configure a graphical environment directly during a #FreeBSD installation session 🎉

Most of the friction was around GPU drivers, but the feedback and suggestions I received were incredibly helpful. A lot of people want to use FreeBSD on their laptops and desktops, and that really shows.

For now, the goal was to provide a simple option to install #KDE Plasma. If there’s interest and more requests, we can definitely expand this in the future with additional desktop environments and options.

New post: shell tricks that aren't exactly secret, but aren't always taught either.

Split into two sections: what works on any POSIX sh (FreeBSD, OpenBSD, Alpine...) and what's Bash/Zsh-specific. Because not everyone is on Linux with bash as their login shell.

Things like CTRL+W, $_, pushd/popd, fc, set -euo pipefail caveats, and more.

They have assumed that all operating systems are like Microsoft Windows 11, Android, or iOS; and have written legislation for operating systems where people download glorified WWW client 'apps', from 'stores', which use 'accounts' that they have with vendors or Microsoft/Google/Apple.

But the legislation *as worded* *also* covers everything from #Debian and #Ubuntu through #Arch Linux and #MobaXTerm to #FreeBSD and #NetBSD and #OpenBSD; where users anonymously use package managers or ports systems to install applications, written by developers, on operating systems, from 'publicly available internet website' repositories.

There is no age field in the GECOS data in master.passwd(5) of course, and the reality is that no BSD or Linux-based operating system has this concept of apps/stores/accounts.

Here’s an ad for cross-compilers and assemblers for UNIX environments.

My favorite detail here is this brag: “Over the past 3 years, we’ve built over 1MB of working code.” Cross-compilers, assemblers, simulators, and debuggers targeting six architectures across a dozen hosts. This code was dense.

The 80’s #UNIX wars were a wild time.

It’s also very fun to read the articles from the time and see what they were predicting for the future. “UNIX for the masses” was a popular topic.

Please don’t be shocked, but I’ve been reading old #UNIX Review magazines on Archive.org, as one does. I’ve been finding a number of interesting artifacts throughout. This June 1984 ad by Cadmus Computer Systems listed a #USENET address: !wivax!cadmus.

This is a UUCP bang path, for the kids who don’t know. The ! separates relay hops, it’s a literal routing instruction. Get to the backbone, reach wivax, forward to cadmus.

I’m Steff, a transfem living/working in Chicago USA with my queer family. I’m a former biker, Queer Nation member, and HIV and queer activist. After a lot of denial, and thanks, to some folks here on the fedi, I finally confronted my gender dysphoria and issues, and begun transitioning last year.

Fundamentally, I think people are better than they think they are, but I have no patience for bigots, racists, sexists, or transphobes. Cosplaying a fascist or bigot means you are a fascist or bigot.

Always Looking to connect with other trans women and fems to try to navigate this mess we all call a life.
