Wow,The Ansible connection plugin "jailexec.py", that I created this year, which can be used to automate FreeBSD jails without SSH (via jexec) got used in an example git-repository from the @FreeBSDFoundation 😯

I feel humbled.

Amazing lost media news!
52-year-old 9-track tape found with Unix V4, the operating system that everything else came from. Only 20 copies ever existed. University of Utah found theirs in a storage closet, knew what they'd found, and got the help of the California Computer Museum to reconstruct the delicate data.
I really enjoyed reading this article, which treats its readers as capable of understanding, and explains some of the technical background and challenges. Kudos to the author Courtney Tanner for conveying the excitement of this find to the audience.

Hidden in storage, a University of Utah research associate happened upon the only known copy of this ‘revolutionary’ software
It took careful work to recover the UNIX V4 operating system from the 9-track magnetic tape. The software is foundational for most devices used today, including iPhones. The Salt Lake Tribune

While cleaning a storage room, our staff found this tape containing #UNIX v4 from Bell Labs, circa 1973
Apparently no other complete copies are known to exist: gunkies.org/wiki/UNIX_Fourth_E…
We have arranged to deliver it to the Computer History Museum
We adopted the Filesystem Hierarchy Standard at Freedesktop! It's now part of the regular set of specifications, and we can make edits, of course.
Right now, it is very historically interesting, but hopefully it will be practical in future too and receive some modernization!
You can read the current HTML spec of FHS 3.0 at:

Nixcraft has written clear and consise instructions on many sh commands both internal {sh bash csh ksh} & external
Here's an example of the usage of dd an important powerful command which does everything the Unix way.
Here you're taught how to use dd safely to clone drive images. ddrescue dcfldd are also covered
You can use dd in any shell you like. You can also use them in your BSD OS

I've easily & smoothly configured KDE Konnect to work in Fluxbox WM
#FluxBox #KDE #Xorg #Desktop #Environment #OpenSource #POSIX #GNU #is #not #UNIX #Linux #freeBSD #KDEKonnect #Android
At this moment I'm roughly tuning a very nice FluxBox Desktop in an OpenSource POSIX driven OS.
I'm working on tuning my Desktops Environments in such a way that it doesn't matter whether I run them in Linux or *BSD
That way I'll just fire up the Operating System inject my own configuration for the desktop environment fire up X.org and then start working
FluxBox has been a favorite window / desktop manager of mine a couple of decades ago.
Since it has been written efficient it's blazingly fast
I combine tools that I love from Xfce with FluxBox so that my muscle memory for shortcuts can be used in a super smooth manner
#FluxBox #Xorg #Desktop #Environment #OpenSource #POSIX #GNU #is #not #UNIX #Linux
Since this command...
`xfce4-screenshooter -S -d 2 --window -s "$HOME/Pictures/$(date +%Y-%m-%d_%H-%M-%S)_Screenshot2.png"`
...segfaults in fluxbox atm I did not bother with a screenshot, because xfce4-screenshooter rocks way too much to use another one

I've been able to configure KDE to my liking so that I feel at home again in the K Desktop Environment.
This is critical because it means that everything from way back in the beginning, decades ago when KDE was released, is still in the current new and fresh version of the K Desktop Environment
It means that the teams which have worked on KDE for the past decades have kept the core of KDE alive
It means that we have an excellent group of programmers, before and current, who have worked on KDE and who have kept KDE beautiful fantastic and magnifique for a wide range of people all over the globe

Kinda frustrated with the state of #desktops in #Linux / #BSD / #Unix
You can either have a fully functional, but kind of frustrating-to-use (too mouse-centric) desktop with Gnome or KDE Plasma, or you can have a lean, efficient, and fast wm/compositor like #i3, #sway #awesomewm #evilwm, #cwm, #bspwm, or whatever you like, BUT you will constantly be scratching your head when #Gnome and #GTK programs either start very slowly or refuse to run at all, and are constantly trying to figure out what combination of configuration, daemon, and small animal sacrifices are necessary to do what the big, bloated desktops do automatically.
It's freaking exhausting, and I want to go back to the days that every one just ran #IceWM, #Enlightenment, or #WindowMaker.
P.S., Just for clarity, I really do love #KDE #Plasma. I think it's a wonderful, easy-to-use, and extremely flexible desktop. But sometimes I really don't want a desktop, I just want a lean-and-basic UI that stays out of my way (for home stuff vs. work stuff, generally).

The KDE team has created a wonderful Network for your Androids it's called Konnect and the things that it can do are so various that I'll just show you one of them in the included photographs
The ease with which I can control a music 🎵 player that works on one Android from all my devices which run Konnect opens up possibilities which are just marvelous for a sound engineer like me

It is once again time to give thanks to Brian Fox, the Black American programmer that has given us BASH and echo! Thank you for your INCREDIBLE contributions to open source software, Unix, and Linux. It literally would not be the same without you. BASH is still absolutely foundational to all computing today. Happy Black History Month to an absolute icon!
