in fact, #Linux has gotten a lot better since I firs touched it in 2006.
- To the point that the only snagging and pain points are due to 3 things:
- This old, proprietary [#CCSS] #Software / #Game, that doesn't even run on current versions of #Windows has problems and needs patching/workarounds (something @fuchsiii has with a lot of old games!)
- This device manufacturer refuses to provide #drivers & #support (i.e. #Intel #GMA500 & #XMM7360) or only releases garbage drivers (i.e. #nvidia)
- This CCSS was explicitly designed to NOT WORK under #Wine / #Proton / #DXVK (i.e. #MicrosoftOffice, #Adobe's Crapwar &, #Games with #Malware like #DRM & "#ClientSideAnticheat"…)
And with #Microsoft enshittifying #Windows11 more every day and with every update, we can see even the #TechIlliterates getting fed up enough.
- And their needs are covered for way over a decade: If all tgey need is to browse, mail, write and consume media, then basically any decent desktop distro does the job just fine!

Hey fedi, what's the simplest (and ideally free) way to set up a network user account server on macOS, like what used to be possible in 4 clicks in Mac OS X Server and the Mac OS Server app?
If the answer involves brew-installing OpenLDAP and configuring it all manually via the command line, I'd rather you just tell me "don't". I'm looking for a tool to do what is (ostensibly) a very simple thing, not a second job learning and administering LDAP just so that accessing file shares on my home network is marginally smoother.

Today’s Small Moment:
In the midst of losing my dad—and my brother just four months ago—I’ve been overwhelmed by how deeply simple kindness can matter. Friends, extended family, and even people I’ve never met have been a quiet anchor in these hardest days.
Grief has also shown me who steps forward and who stays silent. That truth stings, but it’s grounding. It reminds me to lean toward the people whose compassion shines without being asked.
This photograph came from a morning when I rushed up the Blue Ridge Parkway, hoping to reach Pine Spur Overlook before sunrise (several years ago). I arrived later than I planned, yet the light that waited there still found me—quiet and steady, much like the support that has carried me through these days. It might sound corny and cliché, but it’s true.

Today was one of the hardest days of my life. We were hit by flooding after nonstop heavy rain, and every moment felt like a tough battle against nature. We tried our best to protect what we could, but the fear and exhaustion were overwhelming. We watched things we love at risk, feeling helpless against the force of the water. It was a long, exhausting day, filled with pain and unforgettable heavy emotions. 💔
