It’s difficult to describe the social and moral rules of a camp like this. As in Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, the situation was a unique and potentially dangerous one – from within, never mind the war going on around us. An anthropologist’s wet dream! Some of the problems would have been common with any army camp; here we had no real rank structure amongst ourselves, and to FAA we were all Commandantes. The mix was mainly from two different armies: the still-functioning SADF and the old Rhodesian Special Forces, with two Vietnam vets thrown in for good measure.

The Vets were our MO (Medical Officer), a Yank who kept pretty much to himself, and a large Australian named Blue, an artilleryman. Apparently Blue had been in one war or another since he left ‘Nam. He had flaming red hair and swore worse than any man I’ve ever met. All said, I believe he was a fair man, and for some reason I was the only one allowed to drive his truck. Not even Dup, the camp enforcer, was allowed to do that.

The Rhodies consisted firstly of Bruce, whom I already mentioned, who became Trevor’s friend. Apart from Trevor he spoke only to his fellow countrymen and a few others, although he never missed a chance to brag at large. Number two Rhodie was a real character: Hoerst. His claim to fame was that he was originally British SAS and a founding member of the unit in Rhodesia. He was also involved in the first combat HELO (high altitude low opening) drop in the world, which was into Mozambique. A rumour had it that his wife and pregnant daughter were killed by terrs in the Rhodesian bush war, but I never asked him about it. I do know that he had a passion for killing black chaps, more intense than most. The third Rhodie was an extremely quiet and neat man, Keith. They were all in their mid-fifties but super-fit and mean. Then there was Graham, who will need a chapter to himself. He had been with the Rhodesian Light Infantry.

All the politics and social changes took months to develop and constantly changed. People came and left, and this is what I observed……….

Bilbo Baggins said something along the lines of: ‘One ought to be very careful when one steps out of one’s door, as one never knows where one may end up.’

I stepped out of the proverbial door with the intention of getting horribly drunk at the local pub, which was conveniently within walking distance. I was doing just this when someone I’d had a nodding acquaintance with ten years back in the army, walked into the pub.

We were both not working me by choice because I had just sold my house and inherited a nice sum of money, Trevor because he couldn’t find work at that time. Anyway, Trevor had heard that, somewhere in Pretoria, a company was looking for men with operational experience to train troops in some African country, and they were paying very well – in Dollars! He had a contact name: Sergeant Pelsur, a company name: Executive Something, and a telephone number he was too bloody scared to act on. Well, I’m not known to be a man who sits on his hands, so after a good few drinks, off we went to my girlfriend’s house to make the call. All went well and an appointment was set up for the following day.

This, by the way, was Monday. I gave Trevor some money for petrol and booze and we both tried to find our old army records. My girlfriend Charmaine came home and I told her the news. She took it quite well but her 17-year-old daughter, Samantha, was none too happy. And that is another tale with a Devil’s Tail attached. The next morning, after my customary breakfast of a six-pack and a few shots of vodka……. to be continued

Since I am trying to #test primarly this #network I found a lack of venezuelan users more than the 98,6% of the venezuelan people are enthusiastic of social network, but just 1,03% are having a mastodon account. The place is #awesome but the rumours are saying that is just adult content banned of others networks by sexting. #War advertising?

Trump’s threat to ban diesel exports exposed how easily more fuel could be poured on the fossilflation fire caused by the war on Iran, and that fire is hurting households around the globe.
