Those annoying “consent” cookie pop ups that Big Tech has been using as part of their malicious compliance efforts to convince you that data protection law in the EU is a nuisance?
Turns out they’re illegal.

EU ruling: tracking-based advertising by Google, Microsoft, Amazon, X, across Europe has no legal basis - Irish Council for Civil Liberties
EU data protection authorities find that the consent popups that plagued Europeans for years are illegal. All data collected through them must be deleted. This decision impacts Google’s, Amazon’s and Microsoft’s online advertising businesses.Johnny Ryan (Irish Council for Civil Liberties)
Again and again, we have to suffer violations of our privacy for the sake of profit. What can we do? Make it less profitable!
Please use every opportunity to exercise your rights! Make them run in circles and jump through every conceivable hoop.
Let's make not respecting everyone's right to privacy as expensive as we can!
And if anyone tries to gaslight you into believing that you're a nuisance because you insist on your privacy, show them what a great nuisance you can be!

Like to #play alone? #Ubisoft is still watching you!
source: noyb.eu/en/play-alone-ubisoft-…
Among other things, the company collects data about when you start a #game, for how long you play it and when you close it. Even after the complainant explicitly asked why he is forced to be #online, Ubisoft failed to disclose why this is going on. Under Article 6(1) #GDPR, there seems to be no valid legal basis to randomly collect such user data.

Some people who want to leave #X wonder if #BlueSky is an alternative. 😕
In our petition, we advocate using the decentralized #Mastodon. We do not consider BlueSky to be a sustainable alternative because it is another commercial service that spies on user data to generate customized #advertising with it.
The BlueSky Terms of Service bsky.social/about/support/tos
and Privacy Policy comprise 7100+ words 😡. Nobody reads this; this is not an “informed consent” as required by #GDPR. We see the #universities here as having a duty of care towards their students and employees, whom they must protect from such data collection. Mastodon and the other #Fediverse 🦩 services are much more suitable for university communication.
BlueSky is just another data leech.
That's why you should sign the petition for #Unis4Mastodon 🐘 👩🎓 🐘 :

The European data protection group noyb @noybeu filed a complaint against #X / #Twitter last year for violating the #GDPR:
👉 noyb.eu/en/gdpr-complaint-agai…
As determined by noyb, the company collects sensitive data such as political views and religious beliefs by monitoring clicks, likes and responses to posts on its own platform.
Felix Mikolasch, data protection lawyer at noyb: “After we filed our first complaint in this matter, the EU Commission has already confirmed to stop advertising on X. However, to put an end to this in general, we need enforcement against X as a platform used by many others.”
In our petition
👉 openpetition.de/Unis4Mastodon
we pointed out the #DataProtection problems with the major platforms and thus recommend the use of #Fediverse services at #universities.
