France moves to symbolically repeal slavery legislation.

Members of the lower house of the French parliament unanimously voted to abolish a series of royal edicts known as the “Code noir” or Black Code.

While slavery was outlawed more than 170 years ago in France, the old royal decree was superseded and not overturned, the vote comes as the country continues to grapple with its colonial legacy.

Just finished this podcast series by Crimethinc: No wall they can build. So well done and also available as a book. An interweaving of stories from desert aid workers in their time with migrants struggling across the desert southwest with analysis of what is going on with the migration from Mexico and south of Mexico with specific looks at Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador. And, of course, constant and direct US interventions have been critical for the duration. It will come as no surprise that decades of US foreign policy in these countries was on behalf of US-based capitalists, for example, United Fruit Company. It always is.

We live in and under a brutally violent system of state and capital though we don't usually see the direct brutality ourselves nor do we acknowledge it when we should.

If we're not actively organizing to abolish this system we should own our role in allowing it to exist.

#KemiBadenoch says that the #UK was built on #FossilFuels.

But #Ecotricity founder #DaleVince dismisses Bad Enoch's fantasy. He says that the UK was "built on slavery, on racism, on colonialism, on Empire. We abused the rest of the world to be a rich country"

Dale Vince is of course entirely right. So his comments should be commonplace and unworthy of sharing.

But the UK has never de-imperialised. So Dale is on his own. 😡

i don’t know about y’all but who takes seriously a Naijaman selling the inevitability of #tech #fascism and #colonialism?

and now i have to wonder: is Dare’s account meant to be an engagement bot onhere?

because it doesn't make any sense at all to say there are no Black people on the #fediverse because it is averse to “engagement bots”. it does make sense though if you are using digital #Blackface like that “soul” singer on Youtube.

which brings me to the phenomenon of #BlackTwitter

Today, we go into the 2nd day of our conference on "Memory Processes in Imperial Lifeworlds" @dhiparis . We look at all kinds of different objects, and discuss what roles they play in ongoing processes of #decolonization. Naturally, the question of restitution is important.

In this video, Marie Julien Danga (Bertoua) explains the complicated history of a now infamous object in the Humboldt Forum in Berlin, the throne of the king of Bamum.

Tomorrow we kick off our conference “Memory Processes in Imperial Lifeworlds”. We explore how objects—from wristwatches and gloves to monuments—shaped and still shape #decolonization in Europe and its former colonies.

One example: Stephen Foose (Marburg) on British passports—small objects with a huge impact on unequal global mobility. 👇

Online participation is possible!

Watches, passports, flags, gloves, artworks or big monuments: Objects shape our everyday lives. They play a role in history, and it's not always the one people thought they would. Objects also make the past visible in the present, they shape our memory of historical events. This is particularly true in the long history of interaction, domination and resistance between "the West" and "the Rest" and in the way we remember it today.
In our conference from 18-20 march, we want to look at the role all these different objects played and still play in the decolonization of Europe and its former colonies.

Institutions including the #NaturalHistoryMuseum & #CambridgeUniversity hold more than 263,000 human remains, #TheGuardian finds. 37,996 of these items are identified as being from outside the UK.

I have encountered evidence of so many horrors of the #BritishEmpire that I am rarely shocked. Often angered, but rarely surprised.

But the sheer scale of this global #graveRobbery stuns. #GHOULS! 😡

Super-odd to see this kinda language used between two mostly white Christian wealthy educated parts of the world that share a long history of the people themselves - #US and #EU - #colonialism #imperialism aggression rules-based order etc. etc.

The European empires were literally ravaging #Asia #Africa #Americas for centuries until barely a few decades ago. This is all surreal.

Being #British: Colonised and Colonisers

"We are inviting white British people who’ve been born and raised in the UK to come together to explore how layers of victim and perpetration trauma handed down through the generations from the colonial era and before continue to live inside of us.

Recognising the vital importance of addressing the global legacy of #colonialism, we believe that this kind of precise work represents an essential first step in a longer process of growing our collective capacity to gradually come into more authentic relationship with people and communities harmed by our ancestors’ actions.

We see this Lab as the start of something much bigger, and trust that many participants will feel inspired by the capacities they develop over the course of the year to take this work in new directions, including by creating other spaces capable of hosting dialogue and collective healing for British people from all backgrounds."
