This week, two more research and education networks are leaving X/#Twitter.
The Dutch #SURF & the European #GÉANT have declared their withdrawal as of May 2nd.

They justify this with the increase in #HateSpeech and #FakeNews on #X and will now become more active on #Mastodon 🐘.

SURF stops using X (Twitter)

From 2 May, SURF will stop using X (formerly Twitter) as its communication channel. The reason is that X no longer matches SURF's public values such as humanity, autonomy and justice.

The #library of University #Mannheim has left X/ #Twitter:
"As a scientific institution, we are committed to free and open access to information and knowledge and also reject any kind of #extremism, #hatespeech and #disinformation. We have therefore decided to close our account on the #X platform as of January 31, 2024."

Bravo, Mannheim University Library, for this decisive step!
And don't these values apply to all scientific institutions in Germany?
The UB is now looking into setting up an account on #Mastodon, as @unimannheim already operates.

Around a month ago, the radio station Deutschlandfunk also withdrew from the X/ #Twitter platform

It had previously reported: "The #X communication platform is losing more advertising customers. ... In addition, the EU Commission announced that it no longer wanted to place advertising for the time being. The reason given was that there was an alarming increase in #disinformation and #HateSpeech on the platform."

The conversion to #Fediverse is being pursued with great commitment at academic #libraries in Germany. The #Mastodon instance openbiblio.social , which was founded several years ago and now has 630 active library and information institutions and their staff, plays a central role in this. Accounts with large numbers of followers include @tibhannover, @stabi_berlin and others.

But @openblio.social offers a home not only to scientific institutions, but also to public institutions such as @stabiwupp, or the voices of the #OpenScience movement @ZBW_MediaTalk, @unzeit, @RenkeSiems

The portal gave the following explanation for its creation: "There are a number of reasons to be dissatisfied with the current development of #Twitter. The centralized and commercially oriented service does little to combat #discrimination of all kinds, #HateSpeech or #FakeNews."
