One of the things I published in the last two years is the utopian #novella "2042 – The Forbidden Library". It was funded by the Call for Stories of the CCC e.V. in Germany. Thus I could make it free for download on my website, but also print and ebook versions that are available everywhere. There's also an English version, even available at Waterstones. waterstones.com/book/2042-engl…

Libby is shoving AI into its service (and allowing AI books!) and I couldn't be more furious.

Libby is supposedly a library app but it doesn't have any of the values of a library (I adore libraries, they are manifestations of a #solarpunk future).

Libby is an enshittified tech corp who bought a library app. "Libby and its parent company, OverDrive, are owned by the private equity firm KKR."

Juristische Bibliothek, Munich, Germany by Ilia Bronskiy

Submitted 3 books suggestions for the library to stock, my monthly limit. I was so active in making suggestions at first that they bumped my limit to 5 per month! But then I fell behind and lost my privileges. Back down to 3. Need to keep it up!

"More than one thousand #klezmer #tunes, some dating back to the late #19thCentury, are being #performed and #recorded after sitting in a #library in #Kiev for years, thanks to the #nonprofit #KlezmerInstitute.

“This increases #European #klezmermusic by fourfold over what was accessible before,” Christina Crowder, the #NewHaven-based #accordion player who heads the institute, told me, adding that the collection ranges from virtuosic solo pieces to “workaday, regular old tunes.”

#Digitalphotos of hundreds of pages of #sheetmusic arrived on a memory stick at the #Yiddish #NewYork gathering in 2017, but the crowd-sourced effort to turn them into PDF files and share them on the web didn’t get going in earnest until late 2020. In the last couple of years, several #albums featuring the resurrected #klezmertunes have been recorded."

I'm starting to aquire a lot of micro SD cards for the SBC. When a distribution does exactly what I want to, I do not remove it anymore from the microSD card
It looks like I need to just buy a dozen of those things and I need to start cataloging them!

"“#Eldercide: Older #Jews and the #Holocaust,” a new #exhibition at the #London #library, shines a spotlight on this oft-forgotten demographic. Co-curated by Schmidt and Stone, the show draws on photographs, documents, rare recordings and family heirlooms to illustrate the richness of its subjects’ lives, which started in the shadow of the #IndustrialRevolution and, for many, ended in #Nazi gas chambers. “Eldercide” also examines the unique predicaments that older Jews faced both during and after the war.

While today’s visitors to the library might associate the phrase “elderly Jews” with the roughly 220,800 Holocaust survivors still living in 2025, these individuals were relatively young during World War II."

Periodic Reminder: you should spent as much time in your documentation than in your package development. I use #DDD for all my projects Documentation Driven Development 😎 . If I don't like the look of my examples in the documentation then chances are the public API is bad and needs adjustements. #PHP #OSS #library

"Experts in a #Warsaw laboratory worked to revive several hundred rescued #Jewish #books after one of the largest discoveries of such material in #Poland in decades.

The researchers removed about 40 to 50 sacks—roughly 1.5 tons—from a locked basement near the #Nożyk #Synagogue. The bags held mold-covered holy texts, some now linked to the long-lost #library of the #Yeshiva of the Sages of #Lublin, which disappeared during the #Holocaust."

Next we're gonna find a stash of gold teeth in the basement of every Swiss bank... :kermitsip:

Library magic continues! Collected another stamp for my #library passport -- poor librarian had to run around half the library to get me a stamp! This library is gorgeous, love the inscription (paradise is a library), plus eager patrons offering up bookstore recs.
