Joining friends for #BannedBooksWeek! As a librarian, I know how ridiculous book bans are.

From my collection: Bicycling for Ladies (1896). Seems innocuous, right? But Victorians had opinions on what women should do.

The woman on this cover is riding alone, at night, fast, and wearing pants! In one illustration, she broke every social norm.

The inscription on the scroll reads:

"Give instruction unto those who cannot procure it for themselves."

Below the quote, it is attributed to CONFUCIUS.

So good to see QUEER ORIGINS in my local public library!

I love spotting the different ways that bookshops and libraries categorise the book. Some put it in their science section, others history, others (as here) LGBTQ. All are correct! 🌈📚🦋

Reading for pleasure is linked with structural brain changes and a laundry list of positive effects, including improved mental health and reduced risk of cognitive decline. A survey of evidence for the benefits of cracking a book also notes that starting young is linked to better attention, memory, executive function, academic achievement and fewer mental health problems. The key, says neuropsychologist Barbara Sahakian, is pleasure. “Read for enjoyment, as you will read more often and longer.”

The hand-made shelf category signs in the library’s crafts section are so lovely and so intuitive. IT students should be apprenticed to librarians to learn user design.

Gizmodo asks “Will We Ever Solve the Problem of Losing Data?”

I love this answer: “I know of one data storage form that can be permanent: a library. Or rather, a world full of libraries. Libraries aren’t perfect storage devices (nothing is), but they are fiercely committed to self-repair. A good library is a collection of people, technologies, and practices that pass an obligation—to remember the things we must remember—from the last generation to the next.”

🤝 This collection exists because libraries, archives, and universities across Canada chose to digitize and openly share their collections. Together, they've created a free resource for researchers, students, teachers, family historians, and curious readers around the world.

Happy Pride Month. If you know a young person (age 13-26) in the US who is getting their access to queer library books restricted because of local small-minded policies or laws, please refer them to the Books Unbanned program where they can get digital access to banned or restricted books thanks to the cooperation of larger libraries in more open-minded locations.

It's a great program that more people should know about.

If you have access to Libby through your public library, you can type in your local library system and this will tell you all other Libby systems you’re eligible for!

Edit: I though this app was available in Canada, but it appears that it currently operates only in the US, with plans to expand to Canada and the UK. Apologies!

Looking for critical scholarship on the use of "AI" by library/archive workers. University libraries in particular, but adjacent and tangentially-relevant-at-best stuff is welcome too. Any format is fine: books, papers, blogposts, whatever. If it's good, gimme all you've got!

Looks like we're gonna have a department-wide conversation about people using LLMs, and it's being framed as "we're all using it, but we're not talking about it, so let's make sure we're all on the same page about using it responsibly" ... I'll of course be pushing the "there's basically no way to use it responsibly" position, and I'd like to arm myself and others with some critical analyses of issues related to its use in library/archive spaces.
