Codeberg is now upgraded to Forgejo v8, enjoy!
Read the #Forgejo blog post about the release: forgejo.org/2024-07-release-v8…
We are currently fixing an issue where the API version is not properly announced (human oversight during the deployment) which might cause issues with third-party clients. It will be fixed every moment.
Dear Forgejo #admins,
In case you missed it in the release notes, we invite you to our #UpgradeParty to upgrade, set up (and fix in worst-case) our instances together with other #Forgejo admins and contributors.
Join us this Friday at 18.00 CEST / 16.00 UTC. Find all details in the Codeberg Event Calendar: codeberg.codeberg.page/Events/…
If you have events from your communities to share, feel free to also send them to the Codeberg Event Calendar (see codeberg.codeberg.page/Events/… for examples like the #Forgejo #UpgradeParty tomorrow).
Just propose a patch to codeberg.org/Codeberg/Events/
#Forgejo v8.0 was just released! Get it at forgejo.org/download/. 🚀
Forgejo v8.0 is available with new features (support for workflow dispatch, better defaults to avoid spam on new instances etc.), a new approach to UI and UX, careful upgrade of dependencies to improve stability and security. Foundation parts for ActivityPub based federation and data portability were merged, bringing these features closer to completion, but they're not available yet. ✨

If you want to support #Forgejo financially, you can now do this via #Liberapay: liberapay.com/forgejo/
The funding goes to approved team members first, and some leftover funds benefit Codeberg, too.
If you prefer other payment options, you can also donate to Codeberg, since we also use part of our funding for the development of Forgejo. docs.codeberg.org/improving-co…

Beyond coding. We forge. Brought to you by an inclusive community under the umbrella of Codeberg e.V., a democratic non-profit organization, Forgejo can be trusted to be …Liberapay
What's your favourite #FreeSoftware that is #NotOnGitHub (or on other proprietary code forges like #GitLab.com)?
Let us know in the comments! Feel free to also share code from other #Forgejo instances, #Sourcehut or other platforms.

An example for #Forgejo: codeberg.org/forgejo/forgejo/i…
The #Forgejo monthly update was published ✨ It is a high level overview of the project activities.
The User Research effort that gained momentum two months ago continues with a new round of user testing sessions. It is key to build a roadmap.
Building blocks for both ActivityPub federation and data portability improvements were merged into the codebase. They are not yet used for any user visible feature but they are a stepping stone.
Do you want to make Codeberg better?
Get involved with #Forgejo, for example by picking one of the "good first issue"s: codeberg.org/forgejo/forgejo/i…
"Repository name should contain only alphanumeric, dash ("-"), underscore ("_") and dot (".") characters."
Hot take: we're too attached to the #Latin script. It's a historical accident that I can't call my #Git repo "привет" on a code #forge , and it's pushing a cool part the native cultures of billions of humans to the margin. Git itself can do it no problem!
And why should Дима switch to Latin for naming project if John doesn't switch to #кириллица anyway?
Codeberg is overall stable because #Forgejo makes hosting quite easy. We are discovering some scaling issues (and fixed many in the past), but you probably don't have to worry about it if you don't plan to go beyond 10k users.
Running a public service means you have to deal with all kinds of abuse and growth pain over and over again. 2024 was not exactly a lucky year in this regard.

For hosting of Git-projects there are several #opensource options. The best known is #GitLab, some functionality is not free available though. Other options are @Codeberg and @forgejo and @gitea
There are probably several more. Extra information is welcome.
