The technique to photograph close-ups with a black background is called "killing the ambient light" β using a fast shutter speed and closing the aperture takes care of that. A flash then only illuminates the immediate foreground (and makes the colors pop and plant details sparkle!).
This one's at 1/250s, f/16, ISO100 with my 105mm macro lens.
