@_noelamac_ I've known lots of people who self-identify as anarchists and there is no True Anarchism even among them.

I agree with @enbypirate that the terms matter much less than the ideas & values. Which is why I said "my #solarpunk ideals" above — not only are there concepts that people might not think of as solarpunk (but I think they are), those are only MY ideas about it.

Solarpunk is being co-created by all who engage in it (and this is a good thing).

@_noelamac_ I'm sure I'm not an anarchist (although I love Graeber's brain so I will definitely read the article!)

I'm sure cuz I've not just asked myself how #solarpunk can come to be but have spent years writing 4+ novels and 27 short stories about it, and not only is anarchism *not* the only path, there is *no one path* to a sustainable future. There cannot be (and that's reductive anyway).

The prime problem is our limited imagination about this.

Anyway, I've asked myself how can #solarpunk come to be. How can a transition from now could look like. And I think that solarpunk societies can only begin and exist under #anarchism (not in the sense that many think it is, i.e. a "chaotic violent world", but in the true sense of the word).

I'm not an anarchist but my #solarpunk ideals overlap a lot in the sense of building community and networks of care outside of capitalism.

Some places are starting to do this. Scotland just passed a "community wealth building" initiative that's based, ironically enough, on Cleveland OH's case example of reinvesting in their own community. "Spend local" but taken further.

SUCCESSFUL GLASS RECYCLER ALSO BUILDS WETLANDS

🍾 Franziska Trautmann started a recycling facility in a backyard 5 years ago. Now she's Louisiana's biggest glass recycler.

✋ She has fought against the many obstacles that keep glass recycling in the U.S. to only around 30%.

🦉 The facility operates 3 days a week. Her team uses the other days, with some of their glass, to build coastal wetland islands. And wildlife is returning: Birds, gators, crabs, otters.

This whole essay by Rebecca Solnit is wonderful, but this jumped out at me as very #solarpunk

Aus Anlass: mit einem Jungen Menschen für seine Bachelorarbeit über Textilien in Ostafrika gesprochen. Jetzt denke ich: Schneiderware ist wirklich #Solarpunk. Schlimm: dass es in Deutschland ein Luxus ist. Ich fänd es schön, das ließe sich ändern.

I recommend A Half-Built Garden by Emrys! It's a really lovely and wholesome climate utopia, and it's set in a not-too-distant future which makes it much more concrete and grounded.

It also stands out for having a world that is still kind of messy. For the most part, they've gotten rid of capitalism and the nation-state, but it's kind of like monarchy is today - figureheads and enclaves remain whilst most of the world has (effectively) moved on. It's some really rich world-building. 💜
