The #Forgejo monthly update was published ✨ It is a high level overview of the project activities.
Forgejo v9.0 release candidates are available for testing to prepare for the release scheduled 16 October 2024. The contributor and testing documentation were improved with the goal of encouraging more diverse participation. The infrastructure dedicated to Forgejo development suffered a downtime because of excessive crawling and mitigation measures were implemented.
Only some weeks to go until Forgejo v9 is deployed to Codeberg.
The #Forgejo community is looking for your help to provide a high quality release.

Thank you!

Can't satisfy #GitHub's increasingly invasive requirements for verifying academic affiliation for free access to features like private repositories ("Take a picture of (not upload) a dated ID" / "Why aren't you on campus?" / "Upload an image explaining why you're not on campus") so I guess I'm paying $4 a month for GitHub Pro now. Is this a win for Microsoft?
I really need to get around to moving to #forgejo...

Distributed version control decentralization spectrum
GitHub - Microsoft controls it
Codeberg - a nonprofit controls it
Forgejo - I control it
Radicle - nobody controls it
Did I get that right?

Do any benchmarks for #Forgejo exist?
How many resources should I expect to be required for a single-user instance?
Something I really like about Forgejo is how seriously they are taking software freedom.
- They use Forgejo itself as their git forge, not GitHub
- No reliance or linking to proprietary corporate services such as Patreon, Twitter, Facebook etc. They use Mastodon and Liberapay.
- No Dockerhub, their OCI images are on Codeberg.
- No Discord! (really hate how many FOSS projects use it)
- Their documentation does not recommend proprietary developer tools such as VSCode or Sublime Text.
- They recently switched to a copyleft license
Very refreshing, considering how many other popular git forges are either proprietary or "open-core"

Forgejo changed its license from MIT to GNU GPL v3+, it is now copyleft, just like Git. A pull request for federated user activity following using ActivityPub saw significant progress. Space usage quotas for users and organizations was implemented. The Forgejo security policy was published.
Eager to test #forgejo 's #federation ?
We enabled federation on our instance (repo.prod.meissa.de/).
For testing you can
1. fork/migrate one of our repos,
2. configure the following section in your fork (howto described here: domaindrivenarchitecture.org/) &
3. star on your instance.
You will see the federated star arriving on our instance 😀
#Forgejo 🧡 #UserResearch:
Especially if you are not yet using Forgejo or Codeberg, especially if you are not developing software at all (= everyone is much appreciated!):
We invite you to participate in interviews the next two days (Sun + Mon, August 25 + 26) to help the Forgejo developers learn about and improve the product to your needs.
Visit cloud.splvs.net/apps/calendar/… to pick a time and date.
I really want the Fediverse Ideas repo to be an ActivityPub Actor that people can follow to get each new submission (and maybe comment?) in their fediverse feed. This would also allow us to boost ideas we like, to get more eyes on them. I guess this is just waiting for ForgeFed functionality to be folded into Forgejo and deployed on the @Codeberg instance?
#Gitlab enterprise products fail to provide Conan2 C++ package support, so additional servers, uploads and downloads are required and/or we need to stick to outdated Conan1 packages.
#Codeberg and #forgejo OSS projects have this feature for free (next to other registries, formats and APIs for artifacts). 🥰 👍
Looks like expensive enterprise software is 5 years behind codeberg ... but that can't be.
It's a conspiracy 😁
