The fediverse becomes more accessible and easy to use when we hide the complexity behind familiar and trusted flows and better user experiences.

If we want to save people from walled gardens, we need to provide a more frictionless onboarding experience, and empower them with privacy friendly discovery based on services and tools like Starter Kits and the People Directory!

No contact book uploads. No SMS verification. Just one tap auth and powerfully simple user interfaces

- Now the problem is that the detail panel (on mobile bottom half of the screen, on desktop left side) eats big portion of the screen space and on this example even covers the selected arrow-highlighted by grey circle
- We absolutely don’t want to pan the map around automatically. To re-centre the dot once the panel opens. That was voted out on previous iteration
- What is good #UX treatment for this? How can we improve the #design so that the arrow selected around my location is likely visible?

#UX / #UxDesign question for #WindsMobi:
- On this map the blue dot in the center of the screen represents my location. This is how the app loads when I have location services allowed.
- I’m most likely to click on any of the arrows around my location (center of the screen).

I can sometimes obsess over the tiniest details, because attention to detail matters.

My most recent example: Loops DMs don't need to render the mentions in the message bubble. It just looks better without them.

They do provide important context sometimes, so they are available when you need them, with a tooltip popover.

No detail is too small when you put the user experience first. 🚀

No progress in #linux #ux is still ridicoulously better compared to the extreme degradation in #microslop ux.

The win11 login screen alone is such a vile, buggy mess that it takes me more time to log in than to rearrange my apps on linux+hyprland after a full reboot.

🤔 Just found out that X uses Threads-like carousel for media attachments in a post instead of grid now (on iOS, soon on Android and web).

Bsky did that few months (April), reverted, then brought it back (June) only for more than 4 media attachments.

I would like to note that epipens have fucking abysmal #ux. Yesterday, I was handed one and tried to use it in panic (I did not know the person was allergic. There was no one for miles around. I have never used an epipen.) and I ended up sticking the needle in my thumb. Calling the ambulance with an epipen stuck in my finger: definitely an adventure.

This much improved simplify nodes feature in #inkscape is waiting for UX design, but no one has been available to help with that work in two months. I don't want to loose the work.

Interested?

I think it would be fairly easy to do. Just decide if it should be it's own button, a popover, or something else. And make an icon if the design needs one.

Dear #UX designers and product managers, if you feel the need to shove pop-up overlays in people's faces to tell them about your new feature, your new feature is not integrated well enough to tell your users about. No, your cute clipart does not make it less disruptive.

Just have a single "What's new" entrypoint and leave it at that.

Having to tell people in our software industry about known and well-established cognitive biases still feels a little “how didn’t you know that?” but then of course I’m falling victim to the false consensus bias there 😉

For example, company demonstrates a new product at a trade show and they tell us “everyone loved it!” thinking that translates to guaranteed sales and a good UX. I don’t want to be the buzzkill but no, a demo in public is not solid research.

A good friend is looking for her next role as a #UX/ #UI #Designer in #Zurich area.

She has 7+ years of experience, most recently leading design at #Threema, where she joined as their first designer and built out the product experience across mobile, desktop, and web. Before that, she worked on various client projects at EGGS Design in Oslo.

If you know of any openings for a designer, her portfolio is aditivijay.framer.website, or reach out to me for her details.

Boosts appreciated!

@aemet.es@bsky.brid.gy)

Re: flat web design.

Buttons that don’t look like buttons.

I blew someone’s mind today. She’s about my age, competent at her job, but not much into technology.

She complained that she always needs to scroll past the weeks in her web-based calendar.

I pressed the current date shown in the top-left corner above her appointments, which pulled up a big date overview by month.

She was so excited, asked me how I did that.

Mind you, the date was shown as simple black letters on a white background, with only a black, downwards-pointing chevron a bit to the right. It hardly suggested interactivity, especially to those not knowledgeable about web design.

I often think that flat design was a mistake, and today’s situation was a good example of bad user experience (UX) stemming from non-intuitive controls.

We've redesigned the OpenProject blog page 🎉

With improved navigation, clearer content hierarchy, and larger visual previews, it's now easier to discover product updates, migration guides, project management insights, and open source news.

A big shout-out to Fereshteh, who joined OpenProject in March and led the implementation of this redesign as one of her first major projects 👏

Isn't the Loops webUI beautiful?

I spent so much time learning tailwind and vue 3 to build this from scratch after I got home from FediCon last August.

From the mobile first layout, to the webcodec powered transcoder, it's a very feature packed experience that aims to be feature complete with our mobile app.

Sometimes I feel like I just don't have the energy to see so many toots in my timeline about war, politics, tech bros... I'm interested in those topics — don't get me wrong — but sometimes I just need to chill and see some fun toots.

Any tips?

Would it help if we could somehow share how toots make us feel — "happy", "joyful", "sad", "depressed", "angry", etc. — so we could adapt our timeline to our mood?

Or is this due to a lack of enough content warnings?

Is #mastodon becoming an echo chamber? This post from @carnage4life has me questioning our community. The Mastodon team is finally getting some traction, the product improvements are increasing, The #UX is improving, yet people posting on multiple platforms are making comments like this. It's confusing.

I *know* people here don't want this to be a classic social media-clone but we'd *like* journalists to be here right? They aren't coming with examples like this!

Following on from yesterday's blog post about the new design for profiles coming in Mastodon 4.6... here is the video of @imanijoy recent talk at @fossdesign where they discuss the challenges and detailed thought that goes into the design of new features (and the redesign of existing ones). 🖌️

Speaking of leaving Microsoft: Yes, we have an entire team of professional IT supporters at work, trained for MS products - so that's great, right? The system works! Take that, open software!

- except about half the times I'm up there, they can't help me & I just have to live with whatever problem I have, which at present is about a dozen mission-critical flaws I have to navigate solo.

But do tell me more about how MS is the stable, reliable professional choice...

also, regarding keeping things simple. if your business model doesn't depend on third party ad placement on your pages or analytics then it makes GDPR a breeze, no cookie banners needed. That in itself is a huge sales conversion benefit if you don't need to interrupt the flow with unnecessary interruptions. #ux #gdpr

Was mir an #grapheneOS sehr gut gefällt:

#bayern will ja unbedingt die volle Microsoft #UX.

I really do like #Boox #eink devices. I owned an A4 size one before I switched to my #NoteAir (1).

Boox never had great #userexperience when it came to software: their devices are *really* capable but you had to get used to its strange #UX before being able to use its awesome features properly.

The newest video by #MyDeepGuide does not show great product management nor customer communication: youtube.com/watch?v=x4MZX1lPB0…

Open letter to the people who designed/built Jira…

I want to say very bad things but I’m trying to be a better person and speak more kind words than bad words but your product that I use only because it’s for my job makes me want to scream a little because OMFG stop please and revisit your UX because it needs so much help it’s so bad it hurts and I want some salve for my soul which is being crushed.

Sincerely,
