It's Overland photoshoot day!
Found my spot just outside Ararat. On a slight curve, clear sightlines and with the sun behind me.
Now all I have to do is wait and hope the train isn't running too late. It only comes through in this direction twice a week so I can't afford to miss it!

Several years of Deutsche Bahn business travel taught me something unexpected: eventually you stop fighting the system and start learning its moods, failure domains, and hidden virtues.
I wrote down the practical folklore that actually helps: apps, routing habits, delay survival, seat choices, fallback lines, and the strange civilisation of the Bordrestaurant at 250 km/h.

Hello! We are the European Rail Passengers Union. We believe that the voices of rail passengers are key to improving cross border rail in Europe. That’s why we are starting a group to make them heard.

One journey, one ticket: the EU plans to simplify cross-border rail travel.
Buying train tickets that cover journeys across borders in the EU is about to get easier thanks to a European Commission proposal.
The newly announced passenger package will see travellers able to make single-ticket bookings across multiple rail operators in one transaction.

O M G, T I L.
Turns out "fold down seats" are actually named "tip-up seats".
Considering they are a backup for when the area is not used for it's primary purpose I feel like fold down makes more sense from a passenger point of view. But maybe tip-up makes more sense for an operator?

The first X’trapolis 2.0 train has entered passenger service in Melbourne, Australia. The train has been developed in partnership with the Victorian Government and is built locally by Alstom attheresa.cede@alstomgroup.com (Alstom)
Short videos like "Here's how to get from the fare gate to the far-away platforms" or "Here's how to get from the platform to the street level in this direction" are things I think would start racking up hits among people who need that accessibility but don't know that station.
I do a lot of video research on YouTube and usually find this info by accident in much larger videos that take a lot of time to watch (I like them, but not everyone has the time).
Focused videos would get hits. #Trains
My experience trying to transfer trains in Bologna Centrale yesterday (even with more than enough time to transfer....at most stations) made me think of something (of course, I think the best people for this are wheelchair-using vloggers, but even anti-ableist abled vloggers could do it):
A great way to get hits as a train vlogger would be to document for all the stations you go through (as separate videos) all the steps wheelchair and mobility aid users need to take to get around. #Trains
Great day out this morning for the very first X'Ttapolis 2 train in regular passenger service!
This is Melbourne's newest EMU train that will start to replace the ageing, but beloved, Comeng fleet.
Many people came to ride this service to Upfield and back despite the weather and short notice.
More to come in a future video!

Trip to Berlin by #ComfortJet. Step one: the ComfortJet is cancelled, take any train.
&@£#!ffs
This was predicted last evening. And you'd think DSB, which has spare rolling stock, would put another train in that time slot. Nope: two departures of 500+ person trains just cancelled.
Anyway. Toddler and I found some seat reservations on the ONE reasonable alternative (can't make the earlier one, can't leave too late due to toddler being two #sleeptime).
Not a fun start.
Both #Bahn and #OBB have their own bees. Obviously. And their product can be bought in the online shops as rail honey.
I don't expect anything from our local Danish DSB, but do any other European rail companies sell honey?

Your train is late. Again.
Not because of one failure—but because Europe’s rail system still runs on fragmented, half-connected software stacks.
A 4-minute delay in one country becomes 15 minutes across a border. Not exceptional. Systemic.
The EU is investing billions in rail infrastructure—but is fixing tracks enough if the software layer still doesn’t work as one?

How does #ÖBB manage to offer "express" trains that are slower than the regular ones, despite making fewer stops????
RJ with 2h 29min and RJX with 2h 34min.
This doesn't make any sense.
Even the tickets are more expensive for the RJX, despite taking longer.
Oh, and the same connection with #westbahn only takes 2h 22min
Why?
I mean, I know the locomotives have worse acceleration than the SMILEs of Westbahn, but why are the RJs slower than the RJXs?
And why charge more?
Does anyone know?

O M G THE COMFORTJET HAS A FRICKING CHILDREN'S CINEMA.
I can't wait to helicopter/eagle the Hobbit in there this weekend.
Meanwhile the DSB Talgo trains running the same route have a broken coffee-machine and exposed 230v outlets as the height of children's entertainment.
How can two brand new types of rolling stock, running the same long distance route at the same inflated ticket costs, be so inherently different?
Where did it all go wrong #DSB?!?

Just received my contributor copy of a Lonely Planet book which was published in September: Epic Train Trips of the World (LP tends to be slow at supplying author copies, for some reason).
I wrote the sections about the Eastern & Oriental Express (Singapore-Malaysia) and the Northern Explorer (New Zealand). Must say it's a beautifully produced coffee table book and weighs a ton (well, 1.5kg or so). Lovely glossy thick pages, a pleasure to turn.

Yesterday, we took a ride along the East Lancashire Railway. My father-in-law used to fire the engines of steam locomotives (in the late 1950s/early 1960s), so this must have brought back fond memories for him. He often tells us about cooking breakfasts on a shovel and goes into great detail when describing the trains he used to help operate. The driver kindly took him onto the footplate, where he could get a closer look at the controls.
Our thoroughly enjoyable journey from Rawtenstall to Heywood (and back) was powered by Tornado. As the Legends of Steam III event was taking place this weekend, there were plenty of rail enthusiasts present 🚂
