Dear bash experts,

I came across a script today that stubbornly did this for like 30 variables:

declare -rx FOO="${FOO:-}"
declare -rx BAR="${BAR:-}"
...

(So the variable left of the equation sign is the same as the one inside the curly braces. There is only a "💏 after it which assigns it an (empty?) default value, in case it is unset)

Can anyone explain what the reason for that could be? Exporting variables that might (or not) be unset/undefined? Making sure they have an empty value?

Split into two sections: what works on any POSIX sh (FreeBSD, OpenBSD, Alpine...) and what's Bash/Zsh-specific. Because not everyone is on Linux with bash as their login shell.

Lately I have noticed that when you purchase a ticket you don’t get a static PDF/PNG anymore.

Increasingly often, you get a .pkpass file, which is supposed to be opened in wallet apps (like Google Wallet or any 3rd-party wallet app).

Since I don’t like to share information about the events I attend with strangers on the Internet, I have decided to take a closer look at these .pkpass files.

They are just zip files that contain a background image, an icon and a pass.json with the actual information about the ticket. Nothing that can’t be handled by a script rather than a 3rd-party 100 MB mobile app.

I have thus put together a simple #shell script that does exactly that.

Was man jedoch nicht sofort im Blick hat: Auch die @umwelthilfe, @Finanzwende und der #DGB sind Lobbygruppen. Und wie beschissen die Welt ohne diese aussehen würde, mag ich mir gar nicht vorstellen...

Daher sollte man Lobbyismus nicht generell verteufeln, sondern sich der Vor- und Nachteile bewusst sein.

I think I won't bother anymore with writing (bash) shell scripts that are longer than a few lines. I find the syntax too unintuitive and there are better programming languages like PHP that produce more readable code.

In the last two hours, I translated a bash shell script with ~250 lines to a PHP CLI script. The latter is nearly 400 lines long but definetly more readable and it also has more user-friendly output.
