Childhood memories - for the friends in the #USA. In Germany, I had the luck to get the first improved #polio #vaccine of 1961/62 (the older one was not so effective). The advertising for the #vaccination was everywhere, in newspapers, TV, and on walls in the streets. We queued with our parents in droves, enthusiastic.

We still knew people personally who were horribly deformed or paralysed by the disease, if they hadn't died first.

Text: Kinderlähmung ist grausam, Schluckimpfung ist süß. Einfach. Sicher. Kostenfrei. Alle Babys sind dabei + date. Translation: Polio is cruel, oral vaccination is sweet. Simple. Safe. Free of charge. All babies will join in. BTW: We were happy that the new vaccine came from the USA, where it was developed by Albert Sabin. It was a wonder in the Cold War Era: He had developed the vaccine together with UdSSR scientists! (Look for his name in Wikipedia)

We had even postmarks with the advertising, here from 1971, clearly visible next to the stamp: 'Polio is bitter, oral vaccination is sweet.' The ‘sweet’ referred to the vaccination given on a lump of sugar. Today, an inactivated updated vaccine is injected intramuscularly.
