The snake is slinking down so that the head & tongue are positioned with a background of a large red petal of a tropical flower. This is a Blunt-headed Tree Snake. La Tarde, Osa Peninsula, Costa. All snakes were professionally wrangled by a local expert and returned to the wild after the shoot. Don't try this at home. I later learned this might be a mildly venomous species. Before my body broke down and gave up, Pulau Jong welcomed a crew of none sense to her flat, a ring of rubble surrounding a basin of crystal clear water, where giant hermit crabs, cheesecake slugs, miniature butterflyfish, squamose clams and spiny swimming crabs lurk in plain sight and out of reach, making the most of the golden hour and showing but a sliver of the secrets of an isle of djoy.

A flower, or should I say, a collection of flowers about to bloom. There is a yellow pod. The pod has just split open so that 15-20 tiny purple flowers are just emerging, but they have not bloomed yet, still wrapped around themselves, like just waking up.

This festival of waxy lumps is a baby biting midge, AKA a Forcipomyia larvae. Before they grow up to be bloodsuckers, they're surprisingly cute.

They're very common on decaying logs here in Aotearoa, but I don't often photograph them. However, my good friend and fellow macrophotographer Andy Murray loves them, and has a whole webpage dedicated to them - so go check that out!
