We found this bumblebee in a bucket of water, almost drowned and freezing. We put it in the sun, and my sister—who’s a vet—came up with the idea of giving it a spoonful of sugar water. It started drinking right away. Half an hour later, it flew off.

Wir haben diesen Hummel in einem Wassereimer gefunden, fast ertrunken und total durchgefroren. Wir haben ihn in die Sonne gesetzt, und meiner Schwester – sie ist TierĂ€rztin – kam die Idee, ihm einen Löffel Zuckerwasser anzubieten. Eine halbe Stunde spĂ€ter flog er davon.

Daisies—literally “seven beauties” in my language—are now blooming abundantly on the lawns. This is what they look like up close. Each one is different. Some have more purple in their petals, while others have almost none.

Today we dug up a Cetoniina beetle—actually a small scarab—from a flower bed in the garden. After taking a photo, I buried it again so it could hibernate until it’s ready to emerge. Its shell is beautiful. As humans, we’ve managed to create things with beautiful designs, but let’s be honest—nature was doing this long before our species even existed.

This might be one of the most Zartheit flower photos I’ve ever taken. The softness and frailty of the pedals is evident but the texture of the veins also give air to the pulse of life.

Macro shot of pumpkin leaves. This is a "poor person's" macro technique, where a standard lens (in this case, a 50mm f/1.4) is mounted backwards using an adaptor. Not a simple technique, as everything has to be done manually and it's difficult to see through the viewfinder if you stop down at all, but with some trial and error, it works.

The was is technically a parasite because it lays its eggs inside the egg containers of the stink bugs and the was larvae will consume the stink bug larvae. “Cool” is so relative, right? The first thing that pops into my head is a stereotypical 1950’s motorcycle gang with pompadour haircuts, leather jackets, and a cigarette hanging out of their mouths.
