Do you think in words and/or pictures, or do you think in patterns, as I do, and many other autists too?
Never in my life would I have thought that being an #OpenStreetMap contributor would get me laid
Mastodon users who have autism, which books would you recommend reading to people who are neurotypical or allistic and who would like to learn more about this topic?
It can be fiction or nonfiction.
I’m especially interested in books written by folks who are women or members of another minority group as well, but all suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Thank you. 💜

Folks, I'm begging you.
Don't make autistic people in public areas listen to your device's noise. It's bad enough at volume when you can hear everything going on but the skzt-skzt-skzt of a low volume can become meltdown worthy. It can't be tuned out and it's rude as hell to force other people to listen to your noise.
Use earbuds or ear phones in public. Don't be a fucking asshole.
Heute musste ich wieder Autist*innen-Bullshitbingo über mich ergehen lassen.

♾️Ten reasons why I like being autistic♾️
Maybe surprisingly to some, being autistic isn't all bad.
Here are some things that may get missed when autism is defined *only* through our difficulties & struggles.

I only recently discovered this channel and I'm already very grateful.
In this episode, he puts the spotlight on the latest of Uta Frith and as I couldn't make head or tails of it, this helped me a lot.
Uta Frith is yet again using autistic people as fodder for her own ego. #autism #autismawareness #neurodivergent #latediagnosedautistic Buy Me a Coffee: http...Autistic Not Alien (YouTube)

Fighting chaos and playing #RLTE («Real Life Tetris Extreme») successfully since 50+ years – thank god I inherited not only #ADHD but #Autism too.
And listening to songs from my juvenile time → »While I was a Psychobilly« … while I continue playing RLTE.

One of the saddest things to witness online is people going back and forth between identifying as ADHD or autistic because of descriptions of the experience and doubting because of "clinical", extreme or one-sided descriptions.
It's especially sad, when people seem to develop a mental block to understanding themself and connecting with others because of it.

In case you haven’t thought about this before, your “low support needs” autistic parent, colleague, neighbor,… they HAVE support needs. This label doesn’t mean low compared to your average person, but low relative to folks with Level 2 and Level 3 autism. So please figure out what they need. It might take some time for them to even know - especially if expressing themselves was discouraged for much of their lives up to this point.
Your regular reminder:
Autistics do not have an "inflexible ethical system."
Most of you normies have "disturbingly malleable, easily-compromised ethics."
Yep. That was my first reaction, too.
But maybe they need to frame it that way to protect themselves?
If they'd admit we are right to be "morally rigid" they'd have to face all their dirty little tricks and lies...
So it's easier gaslighting.
I wonder what this world might be like if we were a majority and allistics would be looked at as a weird divergence...
This.

Neurotypical people starting a new hobby: "Yeah, I bought a starter kit and a couple basic tools, nothing fancy."
Autistic people hyperfixating on said new hobby: "I've got a storage unit full of every kind of tool I could ever need, and several copies of most of them. I have also meticulously studied this subject for dozens of hours. I have at least two notebooks filled with information, colour coded for easy access."
Gracias 🥰

Confession, in exactly the amount of detail this deserves.
I over-explain. Every time. Ask me one small question and I hand you the full technical appendix, the edge cases, and a brief history of why.
Then the guilt shows up, so I go find the person again to apologize for over-explaining.
A good apology needs specifics, so I list exactly which parts were too much. In order. With examples.
Which is, itself, an over-explanation. About the over-explanation.
There is no exit node in this loop. Autistic people, you already know. Everyone else, you just remembered a conversation with me.

AuDHD isn't ADHD with autistic traits.
It's a completely different experience.
The overlap changes everything — how you regulate, how you communicate, how you burn out.

Works of course also for self diagnosis/realization!
“Autistic rest is the recovery your nervous system needs after the constant work of navigating a world built for a different kind of brain. For many late-diagnosed autistic adults, rest has become something you believe you have to earn through productivity, because masking taught you that your worth is measured in output. It is not. Rest is not a reward you unlock by finishing the list. It is a basic need, and your need for it is higher than most people around you, not lower.“

If you can only rest once everything is done, rest never comes. Here is why autistic rest is a right, not a reward, and how to actually recover from burnout.HeyASD.com Team (HeyASD)
In the UK, 89-97% of autistic adults aged 40+ may be undiagnosed.
That's a whole generation of people who've been blamed for traits they naturally had that went unnamed. 😢

The Deficit-Trauma Loop ➰
1. Autistic trait exists.
2. The trait is socially inconvenient or misunderstood.
3. The person is corrected, punished, excluded, shamed, as well as unsupported.
4. Trauma, anxiety, masking, burnout, or co-occurring difficulties develop.
5. The resulting distress is read as autism alone.
6. The diagnosis/deficit story is reinforced.
7. More pressure is applied to reduce the autistic trait.
8. The person is further harmed (PTSD etc.).
9. They exhibit increasingly more distress and less ‘functioning’.
10. Conclusion: “Autism is simply a disorder.”
For neurotypicals, asking too many questions means you weren't paying attention. For a lot of autistics, it means they were.
Most diagnostic criteria for ADHD and autism were built on studies of young white boys.
Everyone else has been trying to fit a template that was never made for them.
Nearly 80% of autistic women were previously misdiagnosed — most often with anxiety, depression, or BPD.
The traits were there. The framework wasn't.
Living with autism often feels like my mind is processing everything in layers at once — thoughts, sounds, emotions, and details all arriving together in a way that can feel intense or overwhelming. But it also means I notice things deeply, especially in nature: ponies in open fields, wide skies, moving clouds, soft light over grass, and quiet rural moments that feel almost cinematic in their stillness. Even when my thoughts move fast or don’t feel linear, there’s a creative way everything turns into visual scenes, like constant photography in my mind.

Masking isn't a choice.
It starts in childhood — before you can name it — because the world makes clear that who you are is wrong.
