Mullvad VPN has heavy marketing in Washington DC (their ads are plastered all across the metro stops frequented by government workers and foreign diplomats) for example.
The whole "you need to hide something? here we'll hide it for you! Everyone that wants to hide something should put is all in this one consolidated place!"
But they totally won't look at it.
They swear.
No logs, bro. I promise. I can look, but I won't. I could log, but I won't.
So while Mullvad the company is showing their ass, asking what other VPN to hop to begs the question: Why are you using a commercial VPN?
If it's to change your IP address to bypass porn restrictions in fundamentalist theocratic states, then cool. That's a solid use case.
If it's for a nebulous reason like "for privacy" or "for security". Then you might want to see if that tool actually meets your specific threat modeling.

I don't use commercial VPN (Virtual Private Net) offerings, but when a Swedish VPN company defends (in my opinion) massive donations by one of their CEOs (Chief Executive Officers) to a far-right political party with "free speech" and "it's his private choice", it tells me it's not a company I would consider to use as VPN provider. That's my choice.

Viele bekannte VPN-Dienste haben fragwürdige Datenschutzrichtlinien oder unterliegen US-Gesetzen. Bevorzuge europäische Anbieter wie Mullvad oder ProtonVPN, die strenge No-Logs-Richtlinien versprechen – auch wenn deren Einhaltung letztlich eine Frage des Vertrauens bleibt.
Dass bei Nutzung eines #VPN gar keine potentiellen Vorratsdaten beim Internetanbieter mehr anfallen, weiß diese @Bundesregierung.
Sie weiß auch, dass umgekehrt kein Webseitenbetreiber Zugriffe aus einem VPN der eigentlichen IP dahinter zuordnen kann.

Die Lehre: Verschlüsselung schützt Inhalte, nicht Identitäten. Wer mit Kreditkarte zahlt, hinterlässt Spuren – egal wie gut das Marketinggeblubber klingt. Anonymität und Kreditkartenzahlung schließen sich aus.
Wer es ernst meint: Bargeld. #Mullvad zeigt, dass es geht. Aber die meisten Dienste bieten diese Option leider nicht an.
Proton ist kein schlechter Dienst. Aber kein Anbieter kann sich internationaler Rechtshilfe entziehen. Wer das erwartet, hat ein falsches Bedrohungsmodell.
Fazit: Erst Bedrohungsmodell definieren, dann Tool wählen – und genau hinschauen, wie man bezahlt.
