How do we feel about AI generated image captions in #Pachli?

A user's suggested this over at github.com/pachli/pachli-andro….

I've got some initial thoughts, which are in that thread, but I'm interested in other peoples' feedback (ideally in that thread, rather than a reply to this, please).

/cc @stefan who's done research on this, and @dimillian who implemented this in #IceCubesApp

Do you use #Pachli shortcuts? I.e., long-press the app icon, and then drag one or more accounts to your phone's launcher?

If you do, and you tap a shortcut, the current behaviour is to (1) open the post editor for the account you tapped, and (2) set that as the account Pachli will use the next time you open Pachli.

Is that behaviour helpful? Would you prefer something else?

Two obvious choices are...

If you use #Pachli Current then, as ever, thank you.

There's a big code refactor launching today that helps move forward the anti-harassment work for the 2.9.0 release.

There shouldn't be any user visible changes to behaviour, but if you see any please let me know.

If you'd like to help with the testing Pachli Current can be installed from play.google.com/store/apps/det…. Both it and regular Pachli can be installed at the same time.

#Pachli 2.8.3 is now available, with updates including improvements for sharing content, new options for customising tabs, more languages, and many bug fixes.

See pachli.app/pachli/2024/10/29/2… for details.

Thanks to @TalkingDroid, cbiere, Forger125, muellerto, lgasp, -//-, @kallekn, Vaclovas Intas, Juan M Sevilla, mondstern, @BlindMoon38, @bruno, and @austin for their contributions to this release, and apologies to anyone I've missed.

Rolling out to #Pachli Current now:

- Long-press links, hashtags, and mentions to open the "share sheet"
- Better UI when writing media captions
- #Accessibility fixes:
. "Open boost author" works as intended
. Include a "Copy" button for links/hashtags/mentions in dialogs
. Show links/hashtags/mentions options in notifications
. Use checkboxes when managing list membership

Most of these were from user feedback. Thanks to everyone who took the time to provide it.

If you don't use accessibility actions in #Pachli you can stop reading now.

I've just noticed that if you use #accessibility actions on a post and bring up a list of either the mentions or hashtags in a post they're missing the leading "@" or "#" respectively.

That feels like a bug -- if you're going to copy the mention or hashtag you probably want the leading "@" or "#" to be included.

Is that right?

It's the end of the month, time for another Pachli release, so #Pachli 2.8.2 is now available.

You can now save media to subfolders named after the sending or receiving account, and choose the behaviour when tapping a tab. And your reading position is remembered if posts don't fit on the screen.

See pachli.app/pachli/2024/09/30/2… for details.

Thanks to @bee8bit and @andreas_heitmann for suggestions, and to Aindriú Mac Giolla Eoin and josé m for translations.

#Pachli 2.8.0 is now available. This version adds a new experiments feature. The first experiment allows you to reverse timelines, scrolling down for newer posts.

It also significantly improves the reliability of fetching and displaying notifications (with some caveats), and fixes a number of display bugs.

See pachli.app/pachli/2024/08/30/2… for details.

Thank you to Aindriú Mac Giolla Eoin, @ghose, @kallekn, sunniva, @mileskrell, and Juan M Sevilla for their contributions.

New #Pachli Current is rolling out now with significant improvements to notification delivery.

"About > Notifications" has been superceded by a new "Notifications" section in general Preferences. This:

1. Shows the Unified Push distributor being used (if present)
2. Lets you change the Unified Push distributor
3. Shows the notification method for each account, with details of the method and the last fetch
4. Shows you if you need to disable battery optimisation, with a quick link to do so

#Pachli 2.7.1 is now available. This is a quick-fix release for 2.7.0 which fixes a formatting issue when images in link previews are in portrait orientation.

Thanks to @kallekn for reporting this.

#Pachli 2.7.0 is now available. This version makes it easier to use Mastodon's search operators, prompts you if it looks like your posting language is incorrect, improves the UI when posts are filtered, shows author bylines in linked articles, and more.

See pachli.app/pachli/2024/07/29/2… for details.

Thank you to Ricky, Aindriú Mac Giolla Eoin, @kallekn, sunniva, @mileskrell, and Juan M Sevilla for their contributions.

#Pachli Current includes the new faceted search feature (mastodon.social/@pachli/112790…), ready for feedback.

A couple of changes I'm planning on making before final release:

1. Allow searches without entering any text

2. (possibly) Arrange the UI in 3 rows with scrolling (similar to GMail search, see screenshot). This saves some screen space, but might require a horizontal scroll for some searches

Other feedback welcomed.

Did you know that #Mastodon 4.2.0 introduced additional search filters?

You can add text like "from:me", "has:media", "is:reply", or "language:de" to your search text to limit the results further.

That's not very user friendly, so we can do better.

Here's a user-interface change I'm iterating on for the next version of #Pachli.

Recently Mastodon introduced support for including the author's Mastodon profile information (if available) when links are shared. This is used to show a byline for the author, and a link to their profile.

blog.joinmastodon.org/2024/07/…

The latest version of #Pachli Current now supports this. The attached screenshot shows a post with a linked article, with the author byline at the bottom of the article.

#Pachli joins the #NivenlyFoundation

Since the Pachli project started the goal has been to "provide a first class organisation to manage the development of the application under the 7 cooperative principles".

The project is now a step closer to that goal, as the Nivenly Foundation (@nivenly) membership and board have voted to accept the project's membership application.

#Pachli 2.5.1 is now available. This version refreshes some of the UX, simplifies tab management, fixes security certificate issues for Android 7 devices, continues improvements to the left-side navigation, has assorted bug fixes, and continues support for non-Mastodon servers.

See pachli.app/pachli/2024/04/29/2… for details.

Thank you to @ButterflyOfFire, @kallekn, and @mileskrell for their contributions.

(Late-breaking 2.5.1 release to fix a potential crash viewing notifications)

Newest #Pachli Current makes it easier to manage tabs.

1.A timeline not in a tab has a new "Add to tab" menu / toolbar button
2. A timeline in a tab has a new "Remove tab" menu
3. Viewing tabs shows a new "Manage tabs" menu, a shortcut to Account preferences > Tabs

"Trending" tabs (hashtags, links, posts) have new icons instead of sharing an icon.

New #Pachli Current is rolling out now, and includes a bug fix when managing filters (setting a filter's expiration time to "Indefinite" wasn't sticking) reported by @ScottMGS.

You can now add "Favourites" to a tab.

And it's ridiculous that people (like @BrianA_MN) still have to hunt to find the Federated timeline, so now it (as well as the Local and Direct Messages timelines) are in the left navigation menu.

Future changes will make it easier to add / remove timelines from tabs.

So far tracking down and fixing a #Pachli issue has resulted in new bugs filed against #Mastodon (github.com/mastodon/documentat…), #Pleroma (git.pleroma.social/pleroma/ple…), and #open_api_spex, an #Elixir testing library (github.com/open-api-spex/open_…).

Some changes in the upcoming #Pachli Current (with you in a few hours I hope).

@tinsuke improved the toolbar auto-hide behaviour when viewing images again, now the toolbar won't auto-hide if you interact with the menu.

Lists have got better. You can now set how posts that are replies appear in the list (see screenshot showing before/after). And if you had a list in a tab and renamed the list the tab didn't update. Now it does.
