A few months ago The Archaeology Podcast Network had two shows about the archaeology and history of knitting. Listening to them I realised, knitting is my way of stimming. I learned knitting in school in fourth grade. And since then I've been knitting. In school beneath my desk, in university, in meetings, everywhere I have to listen and concentrate but am not allowed to move. Knitting is a way to fidget, that's at least somewhat tolerated. So I knit. That's also why, although I knit fairisle and cabels well, I mostly do knit and purl or lace patterns. Because for me those are easier to count and knit not looking at the work.

I’m looking for at good knitting pattern for socks, for boublebed machine knitting (japanese machines, not Passap).

I want to knit the ribbed edge with the ribber (flat) and then kitchner stitch together after - then knit the rest of the sock in stockinette, knitting round on the ribber and main bed, short rowing the heel.

Has anyone seen and tried a good pattern for this method?

I heard a couple of weeks back that West Yorkshire Spinners have switched off their machines, and the factory has gone quiet. I hear today that they are hoping someone has taken it on, but nothing certain yet. WYS yarn was a staple in many a yarn shop, and it is sad to hear of its possible closure so relatively soon after the unforgivable closure of New Lanark Mill.

Being in the yarn business in the UK can be tough. But hopefully resilient. 🤞

Friends, a Jarre Equinoxe Jumper update:

I’ve finished 23 rounds of the yoke pattern, with 6 left.

Once that’s done, it’s all downhill from there as this has been made from the bottom up, so just the neck will be left 👍

For reference, the yoke is based on Jarre’s Equinoxe album. My son designed the yoke pattern for me, and I think he did a cracking job.

Idea is to wear this next month for his concert in Amsterdam!

First "finish" for the #FinishOrFrogAlong!

Ok it's not a fully finished project, but for me the finishalong this year is about getting back into the crafting groove so my goal for this one was just "finish the sleeves".

It's kind of a project of two halves since this much has been by the pattern, but the rest of the body will require custom maths. So happy to call part 1 finished and move onto something else, and if you think that shouldn't count then ner!

Okay #knitters - how do you avoid getting wrist pain when doing relatively dense fabric + cables?

I'm normally not too bad but I think this project will force me to take a break, even now on the plain knits and purls. I am now past the cables, but general advice would be appreciated

Is there an accepted meaning for how the terms "knitwise" and "purlwise" apply when slipping stitches BACK from the right needle to the left needle? or any other standard terms for referring to the direction and twist of stitches when moving from the right to the left?

I'm going deeper with one of my homemade tools to write text with fonts designed in pixels and render it as it looks on the screen when exported as an image for #knitting.
Now every text element created/modified from the web interface has its parameters copied in a scripting area, and modifications made on the text from the script are reflected in the interface elements. It is possible to write other Javascript instructions for the canvas in this script area.

The planned projects... each one has a project page on my personal wiki. At the minimum, it has a description. But most of them have more than that. This may include:
* database reports on the supplies/yarn to be used for it
* design plans, and/or links to pattern(s)
* descriptions or step-by-step info on prototypes (and how they failed)

The spontaneous "I wanna do this right now" projects have nothing. They may acquire a project bag in due course.

For projects which require multiple counts to be kept track of, I use an Android app, BeeCount (written by @knirirr here on masto)

I store all my patterns in GoodNotes. The primary reason for that is how easy it is to find things there. GoodNotes lets me put everything in folders of my choice -- but, most importantly, has excellent search of PDFs and handwriting. So as long as I kind of vaguely remember a word that might appear in a pattern, I can find it. And, I can edit / scribble / add notes to patterns easily.

Woohoo, it's time for the annual #FinishOrFrogAlong 😀

I'm working on a fingering-weight sweater and am up to the sleeves... if I knit 20 rounds a day I should have it done before the end of the month!

The yarn is hand-dyed on a standard superwash sock yarn base, the sweater pattern is Calluna Pullover, and I'm really enjoying working on it.

Spousey asked me last night for some "jumbo stitch markers". Those of you who knit will know about those. So I drew some and printed them. She asked for 30.

Then I started dropping them on the floor. "I need something to keep these things together." So I drew that and printed it too.

This morning, Spousey had used a few in her current project. Her fiber art is knitting; mine is printing.

Both 3d printing and knitting/crochet produce 3d objects by adding material layer by layer following instructions which are comparable to code which 3d printers use.

Husband 3dprints, I knit by hand and using circular and flat knitting machines.
3d printing and especially the circular knitting machine (CSM) have sooo many of the same problems.
