It is considered one of the most arduous one-day cycling events in the world because of its length and demanding course. The most successful rider with five victories is Belgian rider Eddy Merckx, trailed by Italian Moreno Argentin in the 1980s and Spaniard Alejandro Valverde in the 2000s, who both won the race four times.

Always decisive, it's one of the pivotal moments of every race, and it’s celebrated with diving falcons in the image. The road features the names of some of the greats who have conquered the race - Kelly, Argentin, Merckx, Hinault, Gilbert. La Doyenne is perhaps the toughest of all the Monuments, and only the very best can win it - a race for the ages.
