The evangelical sort of #Christian was glad to embrace the idea that secular success of a very grubby and nasty sort, like being a "successful" right-wing CEO or politician, was somehow compatible with spiritual superiority. They would play the games of The World, and win all the games in order to prove their divinely favored status, and then dance cleanly away from the whole show in a burst of eschatology.

So, greed is good now, right? Avarice is good? It's not quite so simple. You'll never get any #Christian politician or pundit, however corrupt and visibly venal, to admit that they're in it for the money or that they regard worldly ambitions as virtues.

They have their delicate, ever-changing web of rationalizations for why their worldly ambitions aren't actually what they seem. It's like they successfully pretend all their lives that they're a Jesusy equivalent to Batman, more or less forced to maintain the front of being an ordinary person of business in order to cover up for their secret careers of soldiering for the Almighty.

Christianity was already mortally wounded by Dickens's time. Some of the finest writers the world has ever known defiantly asserted that #Christian values and virtues still meant something to them in a world that was becoming terrifyingly mechanized and regimented according to the needs of capital. But they could not stem the tide.

Today, in the United States at least, to be accounted an influential Christian leader or champion of Christian values, you'd better have a whacking great investment portfolio at the very least. It helps to be in #politics or working for the newspapers or running a media empire. U.S. Christianity has decided, more or less, that the Christian God's blessings are indistinguishable from routine worldly ambitions.

The hilarious thing is that #Christianity had posed itself once as the safeguard against being seduced into this kind of cynical, mercenary, very temporal way of living. This was what older #Christian writers, e.g. Charles Dickens, meant when they warned against succumbing to the temptations of "The World".

They meant the World of endless furious business and trade, the secular world of #money in which life and higher principles dissolved away into meaninglessness, washed away by oceans of currency and wealth.

This church is a well-known landmark in #Iceland, renowned for its distinctive powder blue color and architectural Icelandic style. Originally located at Dvergasteinn farm, moved to Vestdalseyri in 1882. In 1894, it was severely damaged by a storm & had to be rebuilt. Ich bin getauft und katholisch erzogen worden. Vor 2 Jahren trat ich aus aufgrund der Frauen- und Fortschrittsfeindlichkeit der Kirche und ihrer Scheinheiligkeit der Sozial- und Sexualmoral. Christliche Grundwerte wie Nächstenliebe, Hilfsbereitschaft, Mitgefühl, Barmherzigkeit, Gerechtigkeit und Rechtschaffenheit blieben für mich jedoch besonders wichtig. Ach, gäbe es doch eine christliche Partei in Deutschland, die man wählen könnte!
