yesterday i read a post arguing for #opensource. pointing at #enshittification in the name of profit.

they used the polish mail as an example, known as the best mail service in EU, now sold to a US company. so now there is no way to avoid the US in poland short of just not ordering anything ever again.

KI hat sicherlich in manchen Bereichen einen Nutzen, aber hauptsächlich noch hohen Entwicklungsbedarf. Im Alltag hingegen möchte der Mensch jedoch gerne mit natürlicher Intelligenz, die zu Empathie und Transfer fähig ist, interagieren.

I've personally grown to hate the security theatre of rotating my bank passwords every six months, especially because of requirements like "must contain one uppercase, one symbol, one lowercase, one special case and the blood of a unicorn."

When mathematically, a simple, grammatically incorrect sentence of 25 characters is much harder for a machine to crack than a gibberish 8-character password with symbols.

Entropy loves length.

I love the idea that the most secure key to your digital life could just be a weird little poem or an inside joke that only you know. Security doesn't have to be painful.

There is one cruicial thing the author mistook however: this does not contradict the ideals of a data-driven meritrocracy. It's just simply not the listener or artist's interest that is maximised but the shareholders' – typical #enshittification.

Fascinating @pluralistic is developing his theory of #enshittification into a general theory of the rise and eventual collapse of power based on network effects.

Short version: Network effects make switching costly. User are trapped and become sitting ducks for ever-increasing exploitation. As long as the cost of switching is larger than the costs of being exploited, nominally free users rationally decide grin and bear it. But when the costs of being exploited becomes too onerous, it starts to look attractive to buckle the costs of switching. Particularly if the burden of exploitation rises for lot of people in parallel.

This, so the general theory, not only applies to social media, but also to other systems with strong network effects, such as the dollar system.

I'm sure economists could turn this into a formula to predict the point where networks suddenly crumble.

Our company just migrated from a legacy product tracking system to a shiny new one. Not a full month into the new year and the #SAAS provider is starting to charge money for #API access.

Hilarious to be rugpulled the instant we cut over to a new solution. I used the API to automate uploading tons of documents as part of the migration, but if this had happened a month ago people would've probably still been doing it by hand as of today.

Es muss endlich eine solide und mehrheitsfähige Alternative her,
#Signal ist das für mich definitiv nicht - aufgrund staatlicher und kooperativer Verstrickungen, intransparenter Finanzierung und technischer Infrastruktur-Abhängigkeiten von Google, Amazon etc. ...und aus Nutzer-Sicht battery-drain, möglichen exploits wie linked devices oder careless whisper. Ich nutze es zwar, aber es kriegt definitiv keine Hintergrund-Berechtigungen von mir.
