A lot of what I do on the #interwebs is effectively research, including specialist shopping research, including some of my #mastodon activity.
Especially over last 18 months my useful results have plummeted, with an occasional highlight, so I have been trying many different strategies, including the handy National Library near here.
Today I have changed my official search strategy to:
1. think of several likely organisations/people likely to have related information.
2. Use those resources....which for some does involve finding....including books etc already on hand or in a Library.
3. Refine....
4. ....byebye most internet searches/engines
Does anyone know of reliable, up to date-ish internet v0.1-ish reference sites, not those ask abc sites, but lists of subject references?

For years, I thought nothing about logging into my personal Windows computer by typing my very long computer password.
A year or so ago I got an ostensibly high-end Lenovo Win11 laptop with a fingerprint sensor, and now logging in becomes a process that I have to concentrate on to position my finger just right and hopefully get it before too many tries. This "convenience" feature had the opposite effect.

Given... recent trends... while I have felt the necessity to adopt technologies I find distasteful or ethically questionable to keep my $dayjob, that experience is increasingly bringing out the #NeoLuddite in me. So I'm here to seek refuge in retrocomputing and artisanal handmade code.
While I am trained as a software engineer, I believe that we should aspire to becoming craftspeople - and compared to the other, well regulated engineering discplines, "software engineering" is ... not it, especially now in its increasing #enshittification by #AIslop

I‘m okay with this, because after tuming on developer mode you can set default USB mode to File Transfer. It persists over reboots.
From now on I‘m using a cable again and no cloud at all — and I love it already!

Last night, I flashed @GrapheneOS onto my boys' new (well, refurbed) Pixels.
3/4 of the family are now free of #iOS and stock #Android. And good riddance! The five minutes I had to spend in the latter to enable OEM unlocking were already too much for me.
