The Big Brother Award 2023 in the category "Lifetime Achievement" goes to Microsoft, because with their market dominance, the company forces people, companies and government agencies to continually transmit data, and therefore to allow themselves to be spied upon, as a regular part of their digital activities. With this award, Microsoft has been honoured in the Lifetime category twice (the first time was in 2002).

The BigBrotherAward in the Communications category goes to Zoom Video Communications, Inc., which as a US-based company is obliged to share data with intelligence services, but still claims to be in compliance with the GDPR. Since a relevant part of its development takes place in China, Zoom is also subject to Chinese control and censorship. The award also goes to all organisations, in particular those working on human rights, the environment and the climate crisis, who use Zoom and therefore expose their participants to surveilance, even though free and privacy-friendly alternatives are available.

Dabei geraten Namen, Geburtsdaten und neue Kontonummern von Betroffenen in falsche Hände. Mehrmalige Hinweise hat die Firma ignoriert.

The BigBrotherAward in the Finance category is given to the fintech company finleap for the fact that over several years, it has wrongly sent information about changes of bank accounts to organisations that have no stake in the process. As a consequence, names, dates of birth and new account numbers have got into the wrong hands. Numerous efforts to make the company aware of the problem have been ignored.

Der BigBrotherAward in der Kategorie Kommunikation geht an Zoom Video Communications Inc., die als US-Unternehmen Daten an Geheimdienste weiterleiten müssen, aber dennoch behaupten, DSGVO-konform zu sein. Zoom untersteht überdies chinesischer Kontrolle und Zensur, da relevante Teile der Entwicklung in China stattfinden. Der Preis geht auch an alle Gruppen, insbesondere Menschenrechts- sowie Umwelt- und Klimaorganisationen, die Zoom einsetzen und damit ihre Teilnehmer.innen der Überwachung preisgeben, obwohl es freie und datenschutzfreundliche Alternativen gibt.

Damit wird Microsoft bereits zum zweiten Mal (zuerst im Jahr 2002) in der Kategorie Lebenswerk ausgezeichnet.

Die Deutsche Post DHL Group erhält den BigBrotherAward 2023 in der Kategorie Verbraucherschutz für praktizierten Digitalzwang. Sie will die Kund.innen durch die Umstellung (der Funktionsweise) ihrer Packstationen dazu zwingen, ein Smartphone und ihre Post & DHL-App zu nutzen. Die Post & DHL-App sendet ungefragt Daten an Tracking-Firmen. Dieser Digitalzwang gehört besonders gerügt, denn hier schließt ein ehemaliges Staatsunternehmen Bürgerinnen und Bürger von einer wichtigen Grundversorgung aus.
