Lovely #NeoFinder for #macOS praise from Texas:

"Just a note to thank you for all of the years of the pleasure of using Neofinder.
Makes file management, especially the several million images of a 50 plus year career in photography, so rewarding." Thom J.

Seriously, I'm so annoyed with #macOS Tahoe right now! 🤯 Anything that involves file operations, especially in iCloud Drive, is incredibly slow. I've spent hours trying to resolve fileproviderd issues and have killed the process countless times, but it just doesn't improve. 😤

I'm sure I'll have something pithy to say about a word processor needing a whole top-level menu item called "Privacy & Analytics" once I'm done picking my jaw up off the floor and then fuming.

Another step for a faster workflow is the new ability in #NeoFinder 9.1 for #macOS to add a unique Image ID automatically to all #photos ingested from a photo camera in the NeoFinder Image Capture tool.

Along with adding annotations, like your copyright information, but you knew that already, right? 😉

Like, look at this shit lol. It's always the browser/electron shit that's hoggggging my memory on #Linux like #Firefox and #VSCode. Idk how these shitty apps could survive just fine on #macOS. Anyway, as shitty as memory management can be on Linux, if even that, this is still kind of an improvement where it freezes for a bit and then terminates the apps hogging the memory - not pretty, disruptive maybe and can make u lose shit u need, but works. Previously, on Linux, shit would just freeze indefinitely and you'd need a painful, hard reboot to fix it.

The memory management/efficiency of #macOS with everything else of #Linux, sounds perfect lol. I'm still dreading the fact that I JUST missed upgrading my RAM on my PC from 32GB to 64GB, bcos I narrowly, luckily just upgraded from a 1TB PCIE3 NVME to a 2TB PCIE4 NVME before this whole AI price bullshit.

I've no idea how but 32GB on my Linux PC is never enough, when 8GB on my M1 MacBook Air has been fine (not perfect, but ridiculously usable) and 32GB on my work MacBook Pro has been astounding. It's not one of those 'unused RAM is wasted RAM' issue either cos both macOS and Linux loves using RAM, it's just that I only ever run out of RAM, in numerous occasions, on the latter and never the former (with the same workflow ofc).

@Codeberg Hey ihr Lieben 😃 Kann ich denn in absehbarer Zukunft damit rechnen, dass ich in euren CI Actions auch #macOS Runner zur Verfuegung habe?

Apple Extends Lifeline for Older Devices

Apple has released critical updates for older Mac and Apple Watch models. These updates are designed to keep essential services like iMessage and FaceTime functioning properly. Without this software, these communication features would soon stop working on unsupported hardware. The updates apply to devices that can no longer run the latest major operating system versions. This move ensures...

Another round of #macos enshitification? The new version shows "offers in-app purchases".

One thing I always maintain in my head about why #Windows becomes so bloated is because of legacy compatibility.

You still have libraries written in the '90: user32.dll, kernel32.dll, shell32.dll, etc.

There is a reason why #macOS feels snappy, and why devs feel compelled to offer apps as subscriptions since they have to actually maintain their apps.

I use an M2 MacbookAir for development. Stupidly, I though 256GB for work would be fine, afterall I don't use a lot of extra software, I develop some light weight native apps and a web app. Yet somehow, my disk space is constantly fluctuating by around 40-50GB because of macOS and/or Xcode. I currently can't build for my iPhone without downloading support which requires more disk space than I have.

Last week I had ~50GB free. Modern proprietary operating systems suck. #macos

RE: infosec.exchange/@applsec/1159…

hey apple instead of forcing those of us who want to keep using iOS 18 to update to iOS 26, maybe fix the fucking UI on iOS 26 first?

Just a thought.

@arnan The point is not the contrast, that's the builtin high contrast mode and it's even worse without turning off the transparency nonsense.
The point is the complete cacophony of radii and positions. There is no reason for excessively rounded window corners and excessively rounded panels, this is all nonsense, a broken design system. And look at the UI Elements teasing us through the transparent scrollbars sprinkled on top (?) !

What is this abomination? This is all WRONG!

Apple once stood for consistent design, this is just ridiculous now. It pisses on every person who spent time of their life working on UI Design at #Apple.
But maybe I’m just incredibly ancient. Still this makes me fear for the future of that company.

I had to modify the plist and shell config scripts I'd setup on the Mac since "upgrading" to macOS 26 Tahoe to get this working without gripes in the terminal.

I like to copy photos off my phone onto my laptop. Apparently this isn't a normal thing to do nowadays. I know this because it's so unbelievably difficult to do!
Easier on windows maybe, but persuading a MacBook to copy photos off a google pixel phone is an absolute shit show of different ropey software. "Android File Transfer" worked on and off and then it didn't. I found a solution with "OpenMTP". Again, unreliable. Now it stopped working. I've found a command line approach. #macos #usability

Holy hell, macOS. Eject the damn drive already. You've had 25 years and multiple file systems to figure this out.

Can you slim macOS down?

Howard Oakley answers a very interesting question - is it possible to slim macOS down by turning off unneeded services and similar tricks? The answer is obviously no, you cannot.

Classic Mac OS was more modular, with optional installs that the user could pick and choose, as shown above in Mac OS 9.1. These days with the SSV, choice is more limited from the start, with the only real op

Occasionally I have to use a #Macbook and one thing that drives me crazy is the way folders are displayed in #finder.

Icons positioned nilly willy? Different positions and settings per folder?

As far as I can tell (and as far as duckduckgo can tell me) there's no way to force a persistent, unified folder view in finder?

The fuck?

Anyone got a recommendation for a filemanager?

If you are running macOS Sequoia (15.7.3) and want your Mac to stop reminding you about Tahoe (26.x) — enable developer mode and then select Beta updates for Sequoia.

You still have the option to install updates when you want but only the Sequoia updates should be offered.

At Vivaldi we continue to make choices that are different from our competitors. We have chosen to not integrate AI or crypto, but instead we integrate a wealth of other features, based on the wishes of our users.

We are a European company with most of the team based in Norway and Iceland, a few around Europe and a couple in the US.

Our servers are based in Iceland.

If you want to get away from Big Tech, maybe give us a try? If you are already using Vivaldi, maybe introduce your friends?

Have a nice day!
