If you have even a passing interest in espionage, the Second World War the Cold War, or Britain in the fifties, this book by the KGB controller of the Fenbog Five is a must read.

I was particularly struck by the high esteem in which the author holds Guy Burgess, in contrast to the regular portrayal of Burgess as nothing but a buffoonish upper class louche lefty.

Being reminded of the Soviet/Russian perspective on midcentury British and US foreign policy was also refreshing.

A famous quote by the late Archbishop Hélder Pessoa Câmara completes the picture you paint in your post:

When I give food to the poor, they call me a saint. When I ask why they are poor, they call me a communist.

Today in Labor History June 28, 1916: 50,000 workers staged a one-day protest strike against the trial of Karl Liebknecht for his anti-war protests. He was a Left Communist and member of Parliament, one of the very few to denounce the Armenian Genocide by the Ottomans. He later formed Spartacist League, with Rosa Luxemburg, and together they helped lead the 1918 Communist revolution. The Prussian army assassinated them, making them martyrs for the socialist cause throughout Europe.

Even with the advent of #bioinformatics, helping integrate inherent DNA hardware, providing potential curriculum proficiency; the decline has followed the path of overt #Capitalism in conditioning 'easiest path' behaviors, aligning too often with gravity = varying degrees of collapse.

And the more 'global' and powerful the concentration of this effect, the steeper the collapse/extinction(s).

Similar can be mapped to #Communism, leaving more room between for #DemocraticSocialism.

Today in Labor History March 25, 1919: Cossack troops murdered 4,000 Jews in the Tetiev pogrom in Ukraine, two-thirds of the Jewish population. They tossed infants into the air and dashed their bodies on the pavement and burned the Jewish quarter to the ground. The Tetiev pogrom would become the prototype of mass murder during the Holocaust. During the Russian Civil War, from 1918 to 1921, there were 1,236 violent attacks against Jews in 524 Ukrainian towns. 30,000-60,000 died in these pogroms. The Ukrainian People's Republic army, Ukrainian warlords, the Red Army and the Polish Army all participated in anti-Jewish pogroms.

Today in Labor History February 21, 1919: Kurt Eisner, a socialist activist in the Bavarian revolution and president of the Republic of Councils, was assassinated by extremists in Munich. The Central Council of the Republic declared a General Strike and state of siege in response, leading to the Bavarian Soviet Republic in April 1919. The republic was run through workers’ councils. The reactionary Freikorps paramilitary, along with elements of the German Army, quashed the republic in May. Many of those involved in the overthrow of the Bavarian Soviet Republic went on to become members of the Nazi Party.

The financial sector is dead since 2008 when two trillion dollars of peoples money bailed out all the capitalist gamblers.

Today in Labor History, July 23, 1944: Madeleine Riffaud, 19, got off her bicycle, pulled out a gun, and assassinated a Nazi military officer as he took a stroll over the river Seine. She was pursued by French collaborators with the Nazis, beaten, tortured and imprisoned in a concentration camp. She escaped, but was later caught, eventually being released in a prisoner swap. She then joined the armed uprising against the Nazis. After the war, she became a journalist for the Communist newspaper L'Humanité, and other left-wing publications, reporting on anti-colonial rebellions in Algeria and Vietnam. She also wrote poetry and a memoir: On l'appelait Rainer (Called Rainer).

All "actually existing" socialist countries were and are just – at best – very authoritarian social democracies
