Tree mugs in progress. I've been on a bit of a handbuilding kick of late. These start out as slabs. Then they are textured, curved into a cylinder when firm enough to hold their shape.

The handles are pulled & why, yes, there is a little owl head perched on top of each one.

Just shipped out these pieces for “Clay As Place: The Transient Object” at Red Lodge Clay Center, May 2026.

From my statement:

“As I decorate with these different clays, I am automatically transported back to the origins of the material. A small ball of #clay is a piece of a place that I can bring back home with me, into my studio, to create meaningful works that are then sent back out into the world—Clay As Place, The Transient Object.”

I know a woman who just retired and does a lot of interesting crafts - ceramics, sowing, book binding and gardening - and she's tired of Meta. I think she would be an interesting addition to the craft community on the fediverse - and for all others who like to see images of craft. What platform (Mastodon, Pixelfed) and especially instances specifically would be an appropriate place for her to join?

The ruin remains of the Falcon Works Pottery factory in Hanley, Stoke-On-Trent.

Originally built in the 1890s, the site housed five kiln ovens arranged around a central courtyard. It began with earthenware, later producing fine porcelain and hotel wares. At its peak, 200 people worked here.

The site closed around 2000. Recently, it was demolished (the legality of which is undergoing investigation!)

📷Sotheby's #china #ceramica #ceramics

I'm overwhelmed by the response to this piece. Thank you for all of the thoughtful, heartfelt comments.

I managed not to document any of the carving and slip decorating phase, but I did get some video of the coil building process. I made a short video that shows the technique, but it's more about my thoughts behind the process.

This is what it looked like before it was fired. At this point, I’d let it dry completely (we call that bone dry) and then I painted it with dirt water (we call that terra sig.) I love this soft, pastel stage and I also love the color shifting alchemy that happens in a hot kiln. The yellow to dark purple is especially wild.

After this I bisque fire, then apply glaze, then fire again. I work in batches so I was making other pots while I made this. #pottery #clay #ceramics #WIP #artprocess

ok i know i've posted videos of sculptures burning before, but this one's extra interesting because you can see the white clay starting to go black from the carbon. if you watch the square shape (the base of a house), you can see the inside starting to darken. it will eventually be (and in fact is) entirely black inside.

i also love seeing the glaze colours all muted like this, given how vibrant they become.

#China #Ceramica #ceramics
