Over on LinkedIn, my colleague Prof. Wendy Timms has a nice video of her on groundwater recharge fieldwork in the lava caves at Byaduk. Check it out!

‘Guano is far more than just droppings’: #scientists uncover the secrets of bat poo in #Gorongosa park

When they see the guano, they see money. But #guano is the thing that guarantees stable environmental conditions in #caves , from the 100% humidity or 50C [122F] temperature that some #bats need to survive

Secrets of the #karst: #NewSpecies found in #Cambodia’s limestone #caves – in pictures theguardian.com/environment/ga…

"A survey has revealed the vast array of wildlife – some never seen before – living within the south-east Asian country’s karst ecosystems. The survey team explored more than 60 caves across 10 hills in #Battambang province"

I worked with a great team of collaborators to produce a uniquely long #paleoclimate record from #caves in northern #utah. We dated stalagmites to show that mountain #permafrost repeatedly expanded during glacial periods and disappeared during interglacials in sync with orbital climate cycles over the past ~600,000 years. These results provide rare long-term constraints on alpine permafrost sensitivity and help place modern permafost thaw into a deeper climatic context. The paper was published in Quaternary Research; if you do not have access and wish to get a copy, feel free to send me a private request.

Secrets of the karst: new species found in Cambodia’s limestone caves – in pictures

A survey has revealed the vast array of wildlife – some never seen before – living within the south-east Asian country’s karst ecosystems. The work was led by international wildlife conservation charity Fauna & Flora in collaboration with Cambodia’s environment ministry and field experts.

The Petrified Cascade

#photography #vernissage #darktable #subterranean #nature #caves #France #Lot #Lacave

🙁 // Exif on post’s instance

A year ago this week I was with a team conducting research in the Scărişoara Ice Cave, #romania. This spectacular place contains #ice dating back more than 10,000 years! This unique archive holds valuable information about past #climate variability in this region. Some of the interesting work that has been done in this cave is reported here: nature.com/articles/s41598-017… Photo by M. Blatnik. #caves #caving #geology #earthscience #environment
