The latest Four Corners investigation is a damning indictment of how we're "solving" the housing crisis. We're handing public money, planning concessions, and loans to private developers—and in return, renters are getting "affordable" housing that often isn't affordable at all.

This isn't a market failure; it's a policy failure by design. When you outsource public good to profit-driven developers with zero accountability, this is the predictable result. We need genuine public housing, not corporate welfare dressed up as a solution.

It's automobile madness in Melbourne's inner west. All western Metro lines are closed coupled with V/Line commuters who chose to drive due to the comms failure. #SpringSt #AusPol

Closing all Metro lines through Footscray simultaneously will be prohibited under an Augustus government.

"Removing the exemptions that allow religious schools to legally discriminate against LGBTQIA+ students and staff"

Remember when Scott Morrison promised to do this...then people stopped paying attention to it and now Labor won't even do it.

Wow the DBCA's response is telling where their priorities lay. I'm inclined to listen to the people monitoring here when they say somethings happening. (My unfounded theory is there is some deep see exploration going on in their migration path we don't know about)

Good piece in the Conversation today about the impact of CSIRO cuts on the ACCESS modelling team - and the national and global implications.

I appreciate the authors' commentary on the risk of brain drain. It increasingly feels like Australia just isn't a great place to have a science career.

Australia doesn’t have a functioning biosecurity system.

But in the 2040s there is a very small chance we might have a second hand nuclear submarine.

It’s thoroughlly disheartening to see a #Labor #PM mouth off #FossilFuelLobby #TalkingPoints as if he doesn’t have a brain capable of thinking for himself.

AND

If I am wrong, then what is so hard for #AlboPM to explain his position and the critical thinking he applied to arrive there?

IMO

The fact that he hasn’t told Australians what is on his mind is all the answers I need. The #PM is a fool and a traitor to #LaborValues.

The #Greens have my vote from now on.

The chief problem Australian governments have with the so-called "cost blowout" with the #NDIS is that they wildly underestimated the number of people with disabilities.

I expect part of the reason for this is that they weren't being provided with sufficient supports and as such weren't participating in society as they would have liked. Hence, many were invisible, as were their carers, being unable to participate in paid work.

A great example of why real reform is hard/impossible. Even on small things like this the capitalists are threatening to go on strike.

Labor will fold and nobody will be surprised.

oh course the stupidest response to the oil crisis has been the federal government's $1.5 billion cut to fuel excise that encourages people to drive more in an oil crisis.

A huge money fire that does nothing to address the problem.

The only upside of it is that with motorists no longer paying for the state roads they can't complain about cyclists not paying for the state roads.

A powerful photographic exhibition by Helen Grace titled "Justice for Violet and Bruce. Currently on display at the Campbelltown Arts Centre as part of the Biennale.

From Helen's website: "In 1976 Violet and Bruce Roberts were convicted of the murder of Eric Roberts, Violet’s husband and Bruce’s father, at Pacific Palms near Taree in regional New South Wales, after enduring years of domestic violence. The trial was short and relatively cursory but by 1980 the public outcry against the injustice of their imprisonment was spearheaded by a courageous Sydney activist group Women Behind Bars. Violet and Bruce’s release from jail on 15 October 1980 turned on the recognition of the defence of provocation in cases of murder where there had been long-term domestic violence and it led to changes in the New South Wales Crimes Act."

Liam Parry gave this speech at a Students for Palestine rally and student strike in Magan-djin/Brisbane on March 11. He was arrested shortly afterwards under Queensland's new 'hate speech' laws that came in to effect 2 hours before his speech banning the phrase "From the river to the sea"

He could face up to 2yrs in prison for this speech.

Australia has now implemented a "child safety" social media "ban".

I use quotes for the former due to everything you've said and for the latter because it's already clear it's not working.

Everyone who understood anything about the tech knew it wouldn't work told the government but they continued to double down on it because *wave arms in the air* "child safety".

US mining company Alcoa hit with ‘unprecedented’ $55m penalty for illegal clearing of WA jarrah forests theguardian.com/environment/20… #auslaw #auspol “Having reviewed the EPBC Act exemptions register this appears to be the first time that a commercial activity has been given an exemption on economic grounds since the commencement of the Act in 2000,” said Lis Ashby, the Biodiversity Council’s policy and innovation lead.

“The national interest exemption was intended for matters of emergency response, defence and national security, not as a convenience for resource companies committing environmental offences.”

“In its new forest plan, the Victorian government has funded a “healthy forests” program. This will likely entail reducing the number of trees in the forest and increasing the space between trees. This plan could lead to extensive mechanical thinning in the state’s forests.😩 What effect will this have? Could it be harmful? And is it necessary for forest health? 🤔
#australia #nature #forest #trees
We describe how mountain ash forests naturally change over time, from young, dense and uniform forests 15 years after wildfire, to forests with lower densities of large trees (and smaller trees) in older age.

Our work suggests HUMAN INTERVENTION IS NOT NEEDED to reduce the density of trees or create a diversity of tree sizes needed for wildlife.”
