#auspol This sounds like it could get expensive...

"Mining tycoon Clive Palmer is escalating his case against the Australian government to 'Switzerland's highest court' after an international tribunal rejected his claim of being a foreign investor and ordered him to pay $13.6 million."

Err, hate to break it to you Barmy Palmy but Switzerland has NO jurisdiction over Australian Law in Australia.

A great read about the impact of neoliberalism in Australian aged care. I mostly love that there’s an organisation of retired progressive unionists called Vintage Reds. How Canberra is that. johnmenadue.com/post/2025/09/o…

NSW Labor is trying to turn our native forests into carbon credits, which coal & gas companies can purchase to 'offset' more coal & gas.
#forest #nature #trees
You can't offset fossil fuels with native forests that should never have been logged in the first place.

Greens MP Sue Higginson has a petition to oppose these changes:

I know you're probably exhausted with the topic of Robodebt. It's been going on forever. It's been a very very long road and the biggest arseholes behind it clearly got away with it, instead of going to jail. But I ask you to read one more article today, and reflect on the impoverished morals of Australian politics over the past decade that led to such an abuse of power.

People died because of this vote winning obsession with "welfare fraud". The real fraud is conducted by lobbyists, bankers, traders, developers, politicians, and their mates. If you're not one of the people who enjoy passive income from your wealth, then you're standard of living is being slowly crushed to make others richer.

"The government will pay hundreds of thousands of robodebt victims more than $500 million. But we may never know if public servants knowingly acted unlawfully."

Confusion on the streets today. A group of flag waving racists, but then also a group of anti fascists telling them to go home to the suburbs.

Ain't no red flag like someone carrying an Australian flag. Pretty sad to realise this is where we've come to as a nation. We are not doing great.

Canada’s population-fuelled growth has masked a collapsing private sector. Now the cracks are showing — and Australia is following the same path, propped up by government jobs and record immigration. When the public sector slows, the fall could be hard.

"Let’s be crystal clear about what this law actually accomplishes: It makes it harder for adults to access perfectly legal (and often helpful) information and services. It forces people to create detailed trails of their online activity linked to their real identities. It drives users toward less secure platforms and services. It destroys small online communities that can’t afford compliance costs. And it teaches an entire generation that bypassing government surveillance is a basic life skill.

"Meanwhile, the actual harms it purports to address? Those remain entirely unaddressed. Predators will simply move to unregulated platforms, encrypted messaging, or services that don’t comply. Or they’ll just use VPNs. The law creates the illusion of safety while actually making everyone less secure."

Why the hell would the producers of SBS News think it was appropriate to include, in a package discussing a protest in Sydney that also included the Premier, the PM and federal opposition leader, comments from a random federal backbench member for an electorate 300km away?

Good Morning.
Patches of lovely sun & blue skies in the nation's capital.

Out for a walk later (weather permitting) to breathe in nature & distract from relentless talk of idiots trashing the joint. We are spoilt for choice. 📷

Have a good one.

"Simply saying “don’t do this” has never worked for any generation of teenagers, and it doesn’t work for keeping them offline in this day and age. The more parents – or for that matter, governments – try to force a restriction on social media use, the more young people will be motivated to get around it."

Note that this article is by Leo Puglisi, who is arguably Australia's most qualified commentator on this issue

Australia's strict data retention laws mean we have many honeypots for hackers. After years of hack after hack, with a raft of highly sensitive data exposed, this is what the govt do—Ban under 16s from social media, which is another way of mandating people share their ID with social media companies.

The eSafety Commissioner doesn't seem particularly concerned with data safety. Commissioner of Moral Panics might be more accurate.

So I guess they're going ahead with this nonsense. Does anyone know if the under 16s social media ban covers Australian fediverse servers like this one?
