Aurora corona developing overhead in the Goldstream Valley, Fairbanks, Alaska. A corona forms when the aurora is nearly directly overhead and the parallel curtains appear to converge toward a single point, a perspective effect, like looking up at tall buildings from the base. One of the more disorienting and beautiful things you can witness in an Alaska winter sky.

This is my best photo of the #aurora last night. It was just after I parked and set up the camera. I think this was near the peak at that location, because 5 minutes later it wasn't as good. As a result, my best photo has those annoying power lines in it.

When aurora turns red like this, you’re looking at oxygen glowing more than 120 miles above Earth. During the geomagnetic storm on November 11, the high-altitude reds were the strongest I’ve ever seen. These upper-atmosphere emissions occur far above the more common green bands, and they require particularly energetic solar activity to become visible.

Aurora Alert: Aurora may soon be visible to mid-latitudes as a effects of a coronal hole and glancing CME take hold. Aurora is currently visible at high-latitudes. A moderate substorm is in progress at Kiruna.
Everyone had just gone to bed when the satellite data wiggled. Within 30 minutes we had assembled by the shores of a frozen lake and setup the cameras, and watched the nordlys unfold. Slowly at first, just a gentle band in the north.
And then it all went disco.
