Over the years, I've realized how far we've drifted from the original idea of the World Wide Web. These days, it feels more like a corporate, big-tech web. I think there's real value in self-hosting as much as possible while still using major platforms, especially when you can pick more European and reasonable options.
People often forget that YouTube, WhatsApp, and Instagram were once independent companies, not owned by Meta or Google. Google was meant to be ad-free, and OpenAI was founded as a non-profit research organization, etc.
We'll probably never return to that vision, but I'm glad I own most my data and have about half of my tech self-hosted and open-sourced. It's only a dent, but I'm proud of that dent.

Something that urgently needs to be understood abut today's youth, in particular how it pertains to the fediverse and open web as a whole is that they are not growing up alongside the internet anymore. This seemingly self-evident statement has huge ramifications that a lot of tech enthusiasts don't seem to be aware of.

What We mean by that is that the web has, in a sense, stopped growing. Sure, FAANG had a strong grip on many a generation growing up - monopolizing attention, experimenting on behavior manipulation, optimizing away the intra-creature connections and insistently pushing algorithmically curated recommendation feeds as the primary means of interaction - but, until relatively recently, it was still pretty widely understood that that's not all there is to existing on the internet.
That is rapidly changing for kids nowadays, however, and it's going down largely unnoticed.

Eine Verpflichtung, Inhalte ins Fediverse zu stellen? Klingt nicht gerade nach Selbstbewusstsein, eher nach einem verzweifelten Versuch, Relevanz durch Zwang herzustellen. Ăffentlichkeit entsteht nicht, weil BehĂśrden, Unis und der ĂRR gezwungen werden, irgendwo zu publizieren â sondern weil Menschen es nutzen.

Ich erinnere mich an eine #Podcast|Folge (vermutlich @lnp) in der @timpritlove einen kurzen "historischen" Abriss der Geschichte des freien Internets liefert. Von den frĂźhen Anfängen der #Hackerkultur und absolut normalem Grundverständnis, Code zu teilen Ăźber die 90er, Werbeindustrie bis hin zur Ăkonomisierung durch GAFAM.
