Today I'm putting together a blog and video about my visit to Snow Canyon State Park, so I figured I'd share 2 of my favorite photos from there. The landscape left a very deep, positive imprint on my memories and I can't wait to go back there!

This one was special. "Sanctuary" was instrumental in my decision to eventually embrace a nomadic life, and call the open road my home. As of this writing, that next season begins in less than two weeks. I'll always be grateful to that wonderful land, and its caretakers, for being an important catalyst to my future adventures and life experiences.

Here's a contrarian take on a popular structure to photograph in canyon country. At the right time of day the sun reflects off of the canyon floor & lights up the cliff overhang turning it a bright orange & making it look like flames. Of course, most images you see are grossly oversaturated to enhance the effect. But here it is in B&W so you can enjoy the textures & contrast rather than oversaturated color.

Hmmm. It's quiet here. Not a lot of people. In fact, I haven't seen another hiker all morning.

The stream makes its easy, peaceful way through the landscape, not in a hurry, not in a hurry at all.

Neither am I.

#Trump Orders Dismantling of the U.S. Forest Service

“They’re ripping the HQ out of DC and shipping it to Salt Lake City, #Utah — the beating heart of the anti-public-lands movement in America.

They’re shuttering every single one of the ten regional offices that have governed this agency since Pinchot built the system over a century ago…”

It was a quiet little stream, making its merry little way through the landscape.

Not in a hurry. Not in a rush. Not worried about being a mighty river.

Just making its merry little way through the landscape, as was I.

Just sat here and watched this cloud form and then dissipate, with a spectacular iridescence along the way. The camera captured maybe 25% of what my eyes perceived.

Happy to report, I was perfectly stoned, and I just sat here communing with nature through cloud watching.

Thank you for the show, Mother Earth. Thank you for the rainbow, goddess Iris. 🌬️☁️🌤️

“My concern is that the government that I pay into, and the conservation organizations that I’ve trusted my whole life as a hunter in Utah, are willfully creating programs that are destructive to our communities,” [sheep herder Andy] Rice told High Country News.

I worked with a great team of collaborators to produce a uniquely long #paleoclimate record from #caves in northern #utah. We dated stalagmites to show that mountain #permafrost repeatedly expanded during glacial periods and disappeared during interglacials in sync with orbital climate cycles over the past ~600,000 years. These results provide rare long-term constraints on alpine permafrost sensitivity and help place modern permafost thaw into a deeper climatic context. The paper was published in Quaternary Research; if you do not have access and wish to get a copy, feel free to send me a private request.

Large, spectacular #waterfalls make great images for calendars, posters, and landscape paintings. But I am charmed by smaller cascades, like this one on the Virgin River in Zion National Park, #Utah. Though often overlooked, these modest waterfalls have their own enchanting appeal. Attending to the small things in life often brings large rewards.

“Red Rock Mountains, Autumn Foliage” — Fall foliage along a creek below red rock mountains, Capitol Reef National Park.

This photograph contains the quintessential color palette of the Southwest in general and this Utah landscape in particular: red rock, green trees (here starting to pick up the golden tones of autumn), blue sky, and brown water. Think about roads. Think about how very many of them there are on this planet, from freeways to highways to country roads to primitive gravelways running through isolated landscapes.

They all go somewhere, all pass by and through landscapes that we sometimes observe and see, and other times rush through without noticing anything at all.

Nine states had their warmest winter ever recorded

In addition to a lack of snowfall compared to the historical average, these nine states had their warmest year on record.

By Jesse Ferrell, Mar 11, 2026

"Winter barely showed up the way it usually does for millions of people from #Oregon to #Texas. Nine states logged their warmest meteorological winter on record, defined as Dec. 1 through the end of February. These dates are agreed upon by meteorologists for record-keeping and comparison purposes, but the historical average dates of the lowest temperatures varies from city to city.

"NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information, which has records back to 1895, said this winter was the warmest in Oregon, #Nevada, #Arizona, #Utah, #Wyoming, #Colorado, #NewMexico, Texas and #Oklahoma."
