I have a #coldframe made of perspex and wood which due to its location gets a lot of sun in the morning, I've added some temperature sensors and it can get temps of over 40C at times, this is only for 30-60mins and then it gets a bit of shade and cools down.

I'd like to try and take advantage of this burst of heat but spread it during the day - so Mastodon friends - would adding some thermal mass help, perhaps a plastic bottle of water painted black?

What's nice is that I have sensors so should be able to monitor effectiveness!

I have a diy project in mind for the next few weeks and the best way of doing it would need several holes taped with a camera tripod mount thread and a couple of screws with the same thread.

I looked into a tap and die set with the common camera sizes and they cost a fortune! I was surprised by the cost with obviously cheap tools at pro prices.

Then I searched again for 1/4–20 UNC and 3/8–16 UNC and suddenly the same tool is ten or fifteen quid. ;)

I'm really hoping for Fediverse help here.

I have a 14 year old niece. She's incredibly smart and extremely motivated when it comes to engineering things.

I want to get her some electronics stuff, like an Arduino kit, but maybe something with wearables, etc. to make it more relevant to her than just a breadboard.

She'll also need some books on electronics, since she doesn't have the background in that.

Sadly, some limitations:

- I can't help her. Her mother won't let my wife or I talk to her. This gift itself will have to be given through a third party.

- She has a learning disability around reading- likely dyslexia, and so we need material that's easy to read

- Her English is not amazing, especially because of the learning disability.

So I'm looking for a kit with a ton of instructional material. Programming, electronics, breadboard, the whole kit and kaboodle.

If you have ideas, please share, and boost!

#maker folks, I need to attach a piece of skull to a very heavy (around 30kg) wooden carving, I've worked with a majority of different materials, but never bone funnily enough!

The bone is about 4mm thick at its thinnest points, I was planning on filling that with resin and drilling through, and using a countersunk screw, then fill over the head.

Would that be the best way?

Hi #PhysikEDU, was für Multimeter nutzt ihr für S*S-Versuche? Wir haben die PeakTech P 1070, aber bei denen brennt dauernd die 200mA-Sicherung durch und die S*S vergessen, sie auszuschalten, sodass auch die Batterien schnell leer sind. Außerdem ist aus S*S-Sicht nicht klar, ob Messwerte stimmen oder die Sicherung raus ist. Ich wäre für Tips zu (günstigen und) robusten Geräten dankbar!

I'm planning to order my first custom PCB from JLCPCB, which will only have one RAM chip breakout to include on my breadboard prototype. On my breadboard, I've gotten the following working:

- ICE40 FPGA (Architry Cu)
- ESP32-C3 MCU (RISC-V + Wifi/BT)
- OV7670 Camera (640x480 30 FPS)

I'd like to use the FPGA to read the camera data and store it in a RAM. Also, I'd like the MCU to be able to read single pixels at ~1000 Hz from the RAM. I plan to use the FPGA to manage the interface between the MCU and the RAM as well.
At first, my choice of RAM was a small RAM that is hard to find with a long lead time with JLCPCB. Now, I'm planning to use a slightly larger RAM with shorter lead time. This is the RAM part I'm looking at:

The design in the image is the old part. I'm now starting a redesign of the PCB with the new slightly larger RAM.
