Cataract

Winter in Iceland; the air temperature has been below freezing all night and so far this day. The volume of the waterfall has noticeably decreased.

The relatively few visitors are bundled into their warmest clothes. I had walked as close as I dared to the drop without getting soaked, but one brave soul ventured closer.

The almost monochrome scene highlighted the blue hat perfectly.

Early March, Skógafoss waterfall, south coast of Iceland.

Lentoid

Mid-August, and a lovely warm day with a brisk wind coming in from the southern ocean.

The moisture-laden wind was lifted by the coastal mountains and met the glaciers, head-on. The rapid cooling and strong air movement created huge lenticular clouds all along the south coast.

Very brief, but absolutely magical.

The Volcano, The Elf Rock And The Rainbow

On a clear day such as this one in late October the view from Dyrhólaey is astonishing.

In the distance is Eyjafjallajökull, the volcano which disrupted air traffic for a week in 2010.
The steep-sided mountain is Pétursey; good elves live on one side and evil elves are on the other. Be quiet and respectful near their home and they will leave you in peace.

And the rainbow? Just serendipity!

Church In The Wide Valley

The magnificent mountains are wearing a cloak of snow. The withering grasslands are turned to gold by the low sun.

Standing proud is a small white church, dwarfed by the mighty landscape around it. The silence is only broken by the chatter of a small stream.

Mid-November. Heydalakirkja in Breiðdalur ("wide valley"), Fjarðabyggð, eastern Iceland.

Bridges Over The Black River

Late February, and Svartá - the eponymous Black River - is frozen almost to a standstill. The bridges are sturdier than they look, needing to carry a lot of traffic to a horse riding area.

It was a lovely day, and we were on our way to a waterfall recommended by our hotel manager in Varmahlíð.

Skagafjörður, north-western Iceland.

The species Culiseta annulata is known to survive cold temperatures by overwintering in human-made structures. The finding leaves #Antarctica as the only remaining landmass without a #mosquito population and shows how rising temperatures affect animal #migration.

There are moments in life that don’t feel real…

This was one of them.

Standing in the quiet at Vestrahorn in Iceland, with the coastal grasses moving in the wind and those jagged peaks rising in the distance… it felt like stepping into another world.

It’s not just the beauty. It’s the stillness. The kind that makes you stop, breathe, and take it all in.

32 years ago I started working on my first browser, Opera. I left Opera in 2011, but two years later I co-founded Vivaldi. Thus I have been making browsers now for 32 years, with a short break there between 2011 and 2013.

I have always felt that this work is important and no less today than before as more and more of you see the importance of alternatives to Big Tech.

Vivaldi is a European company with headquarters in Norway, servers in Iceland and team in Norway, Iceland, across Europe, Japan and a couple in the US.

We try our best to adapt to your needs. We build powerful browsers, with a lot of flexibility.

I welcome you to try us out and share with your friends!

Rainbow Canyon

It had been a miserable drizzly day. Short bursts of sunshine had provided fleeting rainbows in the showers, but it wasn't until we reached our target for the day - Kárahnjúkavirkjun¹ - that the sun came out at last.

The rain was moving away, I walked to the centre of the dam and caught this brief wonder emerging from the throat of the canyon.

Magical.

Lake Myvatn Crystal Waters and Lava Formations, North Iceland

Along the eastern edge of Lake Myvatn, Icelands volcanic past is revealed in a scene of remarkable clarity and balance. Dark lava formations rise from shallow, crystal-clear water, their rugged shapes contrasting beautifully with the smooth, flowing surface of the lake.

Godafoss The Waterfall of the Gods

Few places in Iceland capture both beauty and history as powerfully as Godafoss, the legendary Waterfall of the Gods. Here, the Skjalfandafljot River sweeps across a wide horseshoe-shaped cliff before plunging into a roiling basin below, creating a scene that feels both graceful and unstoppable.

In this moment, the falls reveal their softer side.

Horsetail

I'd wanted to visit this waterfall for a long time. When we booked our winter holiday touring the west and north of Iceland, we decided to hire a Superjeep and guide to take us to Aldeyjarfoss.

The cascade was jaw-dropping. The turquoise water foaming in the cold, black basalt teeth with ice between them, the 20 metre drop surrounded by huge icicles topped in snow.

The Seal, The Birds, And The Cascade

September. A solitary harbour seal has hauled out on the skerries of Hvítanes, its tail and head pointing up.

In the centre of Skötufjörður is a scattered patch of water fowl, probably Eider duck. Beyond them is the Ögurnes promontory with a fish farm in the water.

In the distance is Snæfjallaströnd range with a patch of snow high up in Ytra Skarð, and Möngufoss waterfall part-hidden behind the headland.

Topped Out

A capping cloud covers the lofty crags, rain-soaked and side-lit. More distant cloud is darkening the flanks, but the lower slopes are spread with sunlight.

Fence posts and utility poles stand in sequence, lending scale to the massive tumbled boulders scattered at its foot.

"Earth’s Palette. Seen from above, an ordinary landscape can become something extraordinary, as is often the case in Iceland. Each lake has a different hue, which reminded the photographer of a painter’s palette."

Turbulent

The turquoise waters seem dark today. Crossing the road bridge, I look down into the swirling disruption on its way to join the fjord and ultimately the North Atlantic Ocean.

In the distance is the village of Flateyri, a trading post since 1792 and previously a shark-hunting and whaling port.

Some of the best moments in Iceland weren’t the big destinations.

They were the ones I didn’t plan at all.

Driving through the Eastfjords…
turning a corner…
and suddenly everything just clicked.

Light. Mountains. Road. Silence.

If Iceland is on your list, I put together a guide to the most beautiful places I experienced:

Solitary

Gullfoss, the "Golden Falls," is one of Iceland's most popular tourist attractions. This fact makes it even more unusual that this lucky person managed to have the entire viewing platform to themselves.

The aptly named White River was full of glacial sediment, and the weather had been very rainy so the flow was high.

I took this picture of a bumblebee some years ago. My younger son found it on his way back from school and kept it in his lunch box. First snow had already fallen and this poor creature was already very lethargic and wouldn't take flight. I had recently bought a super tiny studio of sorts, big enough to photograph small objects and managed to use it to get this photo of our guest along with a screw-on macro filter. We gave it sugar water but, unfortunately, it did not survive the night. I suspect it was a male worker drone and, if so, his fate was likely sealed by mother nature long before my son found him. Although a sad occasion, it was a good opportunity to teach my son about the life of hive insects.

If there are any entomologists seeing this I'd love to know the species and if this is a male drone or a queen. I suspect this is a Bombus Hortorum. We don't have many species here in Iceland so that narrows it down a lot.

The high peaks of the mountain are ribbed by erosion and cut by water. The scree slopes soften the lower reaches, carrying the waterfalls down to ground.
