In my "Introduction to Data Analysis in R for Linguists" seminar (based on my textbook: elenlefoll.github.io/RstatsTex…), I spend a lot of time on project management, file naming conventions, file formats, and reproducible workflows using Quarto. Some might consider it a waste of time because it means I have less time for other things (sorry ANOVAS, you're out!). However, this latest round of term papers has, once again, proven that this is well-invested time: my students are delivering fully reproducible term papers in Quarto format and, because they have a firm grasp of the basics, those that are motivated learn far more complex things than what I've taught them to complete really quite ambitious projects. Today's heartwarming quote from a [female] M.A. student: "I ended up having a lot of fun getting into the more technical, coding-heavy side of things, which surprised me! So thank you for that." And many go on to use R and Quarto for their MA theses! 🥰

Talked on the first day to my students about externalization of motivation, or the overjustification effect: getting external rewards for something that we enjoy can reduce our enjoyment. When we are paid (in money or other commodities) to do something, we often shift our motivation from within ourselves to the reward system.
My general spiel is that students have been subjected to this for 12+ years in the form of grades. Kids are generally curious and delighted to learn. I'm convinced one reason why this changes into the dull-eyed stare in many college students is because they have been graded for demonstrating their learning for over a decade. Grading their academic work (among other dynamics) has shifted their intrinsic drive to learn toward grades instead of the learning itself.
It is very difficult, in this context, to keep one's love of learning alive.

Most courses (in my experience) are trying to get to the specific thing, be it a method or object, they want to focus on. Very understandably so.
But with a this leads to skipping/rushing through the foundational concepts.
It's a catch-22:
Starting with the foundations is not engaging and can lead to 'learning without understanding why'

I thought I should do a bit of an intro. I'm fairly new to Mastodon but I'm not a Bsky refugee. I was never on it because it quickly seemed to generate the same annoying dynamics as Twitter, with people doing things for likes.
I'd been off social media for ages until a column by @pluralistic inspired me to check out the fediverse. I really like it so far - it seems pretty chill and doesn't hurt my brain. I'm not a techie but I'm very interested in the politics of tech so appreciate learning more about those issues here.
I haven't posted a lot myself because of having to resize images before uploading, which I can't seem to do easily! 😂 Advice would be helpful. I'm also figuring out the norms for posting.
I'm masquerading as a Common Loon for now while I figure out how I want to build a new relationship to social media.
