The ‘punk’ element in solarpunk refers to the movement’s unapologetically optimistic take on the future despite our growing pessimism and even apathy, and passionately calls for radical societal change — abandoning current capitalist markets and infrastructure.
The movement sparks discussion about current systemic problems and the need for societal changes, as seen with the increasing popularity of concepts such as degrowth, which seeks to scale down the resource use of high income nations’ economies by shrinking sectors that are ecologically damaging and offer little social benefit, and pursue growth not by economic expansion, but that is ecologically and socially just for all.

All is not lost.
We do still have options, good choices we can make that will lead to a better – or at least less disastrous – future.

Imagine being surrounded by lush natural landscapes, buildings covered with verdant plants and vegetation complete with rooftop gardens, and cities that are completely powered by clean energy. Imagine having our technologies built in harmony with nature and shared equally with everyone on the planet. This is what our world should look like as envisioned by the solarpunk movement.

I have a secret. I love watching kids cartoons with progressive themes.
There was an episode of Sonic X where the sun "disappeared" and Eggman then manufactured "artificial suns" in order to cater to the demand of sunlight.
The Doctor makes a crapton of money until Sonic reveals that Eggman was the one behind the sun's disappearance.
Eggman created demand and used it to manufacture a product.
Eggman is the embodiment of capitalism.
"Capitalism is a purely cultic religion, perhaps the most extreme that ever existed." - Walter Benjamin
I wish the slang term "no cap" eventually becomes a signal for opposition to capitalism.
Capitalism replaced feudalism, replacing kings, lords, and barons with billionaires, CEO’s, and venture capitalists.
It was not an improvement. It was a horizontal move. I wish I knew this 20 years ago.
In the USA, degrowth is definitely *not* on the table for discussion. No one in a position of power will give it serious consideration. Most have probably never even heard of it.
The situation is the same, as far as I know, in both Canada and the UK.
It's at least being talked about in the European Parliament, although not much progress is being made. Supporters of continued endless economic growth still hold sway.

Speaking at the Brussels’ Economic Forum, Lídia Pereira, a member of the European People's Party said we must not resort to a "dangerous" solution like degrowth when tackling the climate crisis.
Pereira argues that the Green Transition can go hand in hand with the EU’s push to become more competitive. "If we want to find solutions," she said, "we have to find solutions with the moderates."

Dystopian fiction is dead. Because our dystopian reality is worse.
Capitalism is not an ‘economic system’. Capitalism is legalized crime. It is an extortion racket, set up to steal from the poor and give to the rich. It’s a centuries-long con game, and it’s working better now than it ever has.
You can read about this, learn the history. The information is out there in the open, available to anyone. But capitalism’s propaganda machine has been so successful — and the institutions they’ve built to provide a facade of legitimacy are so entrenched — that it’s hard for most people to see what’s really going on.

Genius move to lose $9 trillion of actual value to try to address a smaller trade deficit that isn’t an actual debt. 🤦♂️
"The billionaire #Ackman, a staunch Trump supporter, put the market's fears about the fate of the global economy in the starkest terms possible.
What they're saying: "The President has an opportunity on Monday to call a time out and have the time to execute on fixing an unfair tariff system. Alternatively, we are 👉heading for a self-induced, economic nuclear winter, and we should start hunkering down👈," Ackman wrote in a lengthy post to X."
The theory says that businesses succeed when customers have the money to buy their products. Therefore, the theory says, it's good for unemployment to remain low, because when it is high there are too many people who can't afford to buy stuff, and businesses fail.
Makes sense, right?
No, not for Elon Musk, it doesn't.
Let's dive in. First, Tesla.

This is incredible. The White House sent out the Deputy Press Secretary Kush Desai to protest that the equation for tariffs on a country was definitely *not* just calculated as just (trade_deficit / imports) but instead calculated as [insert greek letter arithmetic that looks complicated].
What #KushDesai did not realize is that the values chosen for the greek letters in the equation he cited in the paper he cited it from make the formula reduce to…
trade_deficit / imports
"It's essentially #CriticalTradeTheory. Any trade imbalance between two countries is de facto evidence of systemic unfair trade practices."

I forget who I learned this from, but it's pretty useful to add Reagan's face right around 1981 to help understand changes in US over time.
