Pretty great collection of PNW bird calls by navarreswildshots. That Pine Siskin call is one I've been trying to figure out for a long time.

“The program has exceeded all our expectations,” said Loretta Holmes, a UNB member and senior resource technician with the band’s stewardship department.

“The owls, which we call sq̓əq̓axʷ, have responded better than we dared to hope ten years ago. And community interest and involvement has been strong since the start.”

A beautiful encounter last week while tracking a cougar. The deer was nervous. A cougar was spotted there two days prior to my first visit. It is only a matter of time before I see and photograph one. There has been a lot of sightings in different areas in my region recently.

Sometimes a little bird will land on a branch close to you and give you enough time to set your camera for a few good photos. The encounter will be short but nice. Then you'll spend a very very long time in bird books and reliable websites to try to identify the little bugger, I mean the little bird.

This is a Hammond's flycatcher (Empidonax hammondii) photographed last week while tracking cougars.

Kudos to Canadian bike advocates sharing helpful resources, in particular: Thanks to BC Cycling Coalition and Capital Bike for bike event parking / bike valet templates, etc. Updated links: Toolkit bcbikevalet.ca/contents
/ related report bccycling.ca/blog/bike-valets-…

Monterey County is among the many regions that have had bike valet parking bikemonterey.org/tips-for-tour… at some events, but not nearly enough. (It isn’t feasible that the most frequent valet provider for many years simply can’t do it all.) We’d love to see more people providing bike valet parking here—and chances are many of you have the same need in your region.

Save yourself some time; check out those resources from generous bike advocates in Canada!

Drove across the island to Ucluelet and Tofino yesterday... the drive is beautiful and the coast is stunning. It's a 2.5 hour drive, but I'd totally do it again to spend a whole day at Long Beach.

Hundreds of sea lions gathered for the herring spawn on Vancouver Island this year. It attracted orcas, of course. Bald eagles, shorebirds, ducks and gulls enjoyed the feast as well.

All images and footage in this video were taken from the shore. I organize photo tours on land each year during the herring spawn if you're interested...

Updating my website is part of my regular maintenance. This week I added new tours for 2028 and created new pages in my portfolio. One for Grizzly Bears: catherinebabault.com/grizzly-b…
