Am 2. Juni 2019 wurde der Kasseler Regierungspräsident Walter Lübcke auf der Terrasse seines Wohnhauses erschossen.

Der Täter, Stephan Ernst, wurde 2021 wegen Mordes zu einer lebenslangen Freiheitsstrafe verurteilt. Er war seit den 1980er Jahren in der rechtsextremen Szene aktiv und bereits zuvor durch rassistisch motivierte Gewalttaten aufgefallen.

Today marks the 100th anniversary of one of the worst rail disasters in the history of Melbourne.

On 26 May 1926, a packed Tait electric train crashed into the rear of another waiting on Platform 4 at Caulfield Railway Station.

Three people were killed and over 170 others were injured.

#OnThisDay, 20 May 2016, Tsai Ing-wen was sworn in as President of Taiwan. She is the first woman to hold the role, and was re-elected in 2020.

In 2019 she had pushed through the legalisation of same-sex marriage, despite 67% of the country rejecting it in a referendum.

#OnThisDay, 12 May 1743, Maria Theresa Habsburg is crowned Queen of Bohemia and consolidates her position as the ruler of the Austrian empire. The Seven Year War was promoted by rival claims to the empire, and she worked to elevate her husband to be Holy Roman Emperor. After his death she co-ruled with her son.

She sponsored trials of smallpox inoculation, having lost three of her children to the disease.

#OnThisDay, 27 Apr 1992, Betty Boothroyd was elected Speaker of the UK House of Commons. She was the first - and to date only - woman to hold the role.

A working class woman, Betty had been a dancer before working for JFK and becoming an MP. She went on to sit in the House of Lords.

Der Tag wurde 2006 vom "American Institute of Graphic Arts" initiiert und soll darauf aufmerksam machen, was hinter dem Konzept des Designs steht – nämlich die Vereinigung von Kunst und Handwerk.

#OnThisDay, 22 April 1969, Bernadette Devlin makes her maiden speech in the House of Parliament in London. An Irish Republican, she had rejected their tradition of abstention in order to take her seat. She remained an MP until 1974.

#OnThisDay, 20 Apr 1902, Maria Skłodowska-Curie and Pierre Curie refine radium chlorine. The discovery leads to Marie being the first woman to win the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1903.

The committee had planned to only award the Nobel to Pierre and Henri. Committee member and Swedish mathematician Magnus Gösta Mittag-Leffler alerted Pierre Curie to the plan. Pierre insisted Marie also receive the prize.

#OnThisDay, 7 Apr 1141, Matilda is legally recognised as ruler of England in her own right. Her coronation never happens.

She was appointed heir by her father Henry I, then usurped by her cousin Stephen after Henry’s death. The civil war between the cousins is known as the Anarchy and lasted from 1138 to 1153.

After losing the 2014 election, Banda was accused of corruption and went into exile. She returned, has never been charged with corruption and ran, unsuccessfully, in the 2025 election.

#OnThisDay, 3 Apr 1979, Jane Byrne wins the Chicago mayoral election. She is the first woman to be mayor of the city and is sworn in on 16 April. She hires the first black woman to be a school superintendent in the city, and stops the police raiding gay bars.

Lori Lightfoot was the second woman to hold the post, from 2019 to 2023. She’s the first black woman and the first LGBT+ mayor since the post was created in 1837.
