Fascinating conversation about the electrification of #Nepal: youtube.com/watch?v=jBgpJN8Ero…

Important driver of electrification: Oil is expensive because transporting it to Nepal takes work. Plus, all money spent on oil goes to other countries.

Common theme: You must be able to service vehicles locally.

Trishuli, Nepal
People look at a house, damaged during August’s floods at Trishuli. Nepal’s prime minister, Balendra Shah, scolded world leaders at the UN this week, saying last month’s catastrophic deadly flood was a reminder that climate change keeps hurting people who didn’t cause the crisis.

Two decades after a helicopter crash claimed 24 of Nepal’s top conservationists, the loss of visionary leadership is still felt.

While tiger numbers tripled on community models built by that "lost generation," rising human-wildlife conflict demands a new approach.

[Commentary] A recent river disaster on the Tibetan Plateau serves as a severe warning against proposed hydropower projects on the Karnali, Nepal's last undammed river.

Conservationists Gary Wockner and Megh Ale argue that keeping the Karnali free-flowing is vital for safety, biodiversity, and cultural heritage.

Nepal’s wild tiger population has made a remarkable recovery, showing what sustained conservation and coexistence between people and wildlife can achieve. Protecting habitat while helping communities live safely alongside tigers is giving this iconic species a stronger future.

New York Times: ‘Mama, I Miss You’: Relatives Go Online to Grieve Tibet’s Flood Victims.. “Nearly two weeks have passed since a fierce deluge of ice, boulders and mud tore through a border complex in Tibet, but China has not released an official list of those missing. In the information void, people have found their own ways to seek help and vent their grief.”

My letter to the Guardian: The recent glacial collapse and catastrophic floods in Nepal and Tibet are not 'natural disasters.' They reflect accelerating climate disruption that disproportionately affects the countries and people that are least responsible for global emissions. They lay bare climate injustices and highlight that climate disruption is global, and highly unequal. The UK and other high income countries must step up their development commitments and funding for climate adaptation, and loss and damage, to support those living on the frontlines of climate change. Anything less is a failure of responsibility. #ClimateChange #ClimateDIary #Nepal #GlacialFloods #ClimateJustice

Nepal demands that big polluters pay for the devastation recent floods caused - and we couldn't agree more!

It’s time to make polluters pay for the climate chaos they’re fuelling around the world.

Where are these governments supposed to get the money to pay for climate damages?

By taxing fossil fuels industries too >> act.gp/3RLI2EV

“This was not a ‘natural’ disaster. Nothing about it was natural. ... No one could have predicted this disaster would happen when it did. But anyone could have said it was bound to happen one day."

And yet, Nepal is one of the nations least responsible for fossil fuel pollution; in 2024, it produced just 0.05% of the world’s carbon dioxide emissions.

RFI: Deadly Floods in Nepal: Washington's Elimination of USAID Program Under Scrutiny

More than 1,200 people have died and more than 4,200 are missing after the floods that struck Nepal on August 26. Following the disaster, former officials of USAID, the United States Agency for International Development, are questioning the elimination of a program dedicated to flood prevention and monitoring of glacier-related risks. The program's elimination had been decided in 2025 by the Trump administration.

And yes, I do little things that bring joy. I spent Saturday afternoon doing crafts with my sister; such deep happiness from that (communal crafting- the best!). Monday we did a “Maize Maze” in a local farm which was beautiful. All this continues to be good. I also do try taking action of course (through work, #GreenParty, etc). It’s just that the underlying bigger picture feels so incredibly bleak,it’s hard to stay cheery.
