Every account on Mastodon and the rest of the Fediverse has a unique "Fediverse address" like this:

@ (user) @ (server)

You can see an account's address on its profile page, and it's also on all posts below the username.

Fediverse addresses let you easily follow any Fediverse account by pasting the address into your server's search box. It works with addresses from all kinds of Fedi servers including Mastodon, Pixelfed, PeerTube etc.

Whenever anyone tells me it's confusing, I like to remind them that it's exactly the same as an email address. You have a username and then the domain of the service that hosts it.

p.s. If you would like some Fediverse addresses to try following, there are thousands of hand-picked interesting accounts listed at fedi.directory

Actually found this useful. Found a bunch of new accounts to follow! Missing a fun Photoshop account tho. Kinda like Photoshop Battles or something... that would be fun!

Could you message my other account @FediFollows ? Thanks 😀

got any tip or site to point me to that explains why toots are showing up in my "Following" feed but I don't follow them at all, nor has anyone I follow engaged with their content?

I've seen content showing up in this feed lately and wondering why.

Als Antwort auf Matthew Hall

It's probably because you're following hashtags that are in those toots?

You can check which hashtags you follow by going to your profile page. If you're on the official app you can click the # at the top to see your followed tags. If you're on the website click ... and then "followed hashtags". Third party apps have various interfaces for checking.

Okay, glad to hear it worked! A number of people have asked about this same thing lately, I'll do a post about it.

Maybe Mastodon needs to label these hashtag-subscription posts so people understand where they are coming from?
