@social please don't shut this service down. We need Mozilla in the Fediverse. There is a great opportunity for Mozilla to shape the path of the social web. I think it's a better social network with Mozilla here. #SaveMozillaSocial
I feel the same way about the BBC ( @BBCRD) , which also seems to have given up on its fediverse experiment. I remember BBC was an active early adopter in Web 2.0, which worked out well for them in the end. Same could apply here.
I just queried in #Wikidata how many institutes and universities have Mastodon account, and they show that most of them are in Germany (103). This is not surprising to me because Mastodon is a German-branded system.
However, I don't find how to query how many institutes hare integrated with the Fediverse beyond Mastodon. For example, the CS department where I studied has a #PeerTube channel (pt.dcc.uchile.cl).

The large number of German universities in the #fediverse is unrelated to Mastodon being incorporated in Germany. Instead, it's a direct result of the heroic effort of @neuSoM to get German universities to close down their presence on X/Twitter and join us here. Your numbers show that this is working extremely well!
It has to be mentioned that most unis with Mastodon accounts had those already before we started in 01/24. Many of them were from BaWü, where the fediverse server bawü.social was set up in 2021 (?) by @lfdi (great job!), so that unis could easily open accounts. This explains, why many unis from BaWü have high follower number (see mastodon-listen.playground.54g… ). But also innovative social media departments from unis in other Bundesländer started early like Jena and Greifswald. In fact, @unijena , started first on January 27th in 2020 (evt. because Eugen Rochko was active there at that time), which was shortly followed by @UniUlm in March 2020 (not on bawü.social, but on mastodon.social). We at @neuSoM just had to pick up on these great developments and did a lot of advertising for their Mastodon channels, including pictures of logos that link to #Mastodon accounts cloud.wechange.de/s/CAyjDQoyTH… We now have a good feeling that unis have arrived in the #Fediverse.
A #PeerTube channel for university videos is a cool thing. We recommend this as the second activity that #universities in the #Fediverse should take after setting up a #Mastodon channel. It's great that you've already done that. Feel free to report on it here; there are many university teachers and researchers who would like to benefit from your experiences.
