I have been playing with NodeJS for a few months now, and just wrapped up my first project. I still don't understand why we want to use JavaScript server-side as opposed to a server-side language like PHP. What am I missing? Who can enlighten me?

The only convincing argument I've heard is having only one language to learn for front and back. But that often comes from the same people that do their HTML and CSS in React, too so take with lots of salt.
