There goes @caseynewton with Platformer, one of Substack's largest newsletters 👋

pretty remarkable just how scummy Substack has been throughout all this.

this on top of the news that they actively solicited that anti-anti-Nazi letter!

i think one thing that we've learned collectively (or at least i hope that we have learned) is that if you take a garbage human and you push them through some kind of collegiate repertoire in an effort to un-garbage them, more times than we all care to admit, the result is just a really well worded garbage person who is now armed with better scaffolding onto which to insert more garbage. and substack's founders seem to make the case for that measure

Hate speech on social media generates clicks and revenue. Platforms will only take action when the problem becomes too large and publicized to avoid substantial backlash.

The primary reason they finally remove hateful content is to remove that evidence of the platform's systemic failure to moderate, rather than due to the prolific content violations themselves.

Can you direct me to the report about Substack soliciting the anti-anti-Nazi letter? Sounds totally like the type of thing they'd do, but I'd like to read more.

EDIT: Found it! substack.com/@katz/note/c-4698…

Good move (literally). I appreciate the Q/A and responses to concerns many of us have raised.

@caseynewton

The Nazi bar fucked him over. Now he may begin to understand why you don't appease the Nazi bar.

[edited because I'm daft] Platformer is big enough that Substack should be concerned

Wird #Substack das neue Twitter (im negativen Sinne)? #Hhost scheint eine Open-Source-Alternative zu Substack zu sein. Kenne ich noch nicht, muss ich mir mal ansehen.

Yikes "It was not, however, a comprehensive review of hate speech on the platform. And to my profound disappointment, before the company even acted on what we sent them, Substack shared the scope of our findings with another, friendlier publication on the platform, along with the information that these publications collectively had few subscribers and were not making money. (It later apologized to me for doing this.)" 😬

“Substack deserves credit for kicking off a revolution in independent publishing. But the world it helped to birth is now much bigger than its own platform. Next week we will move to a new home in that world. One where readers can feel confident their money is not going to accelerate the growth of hate movements. And one where we are no longer called upon constantly to defend an ideology we do not believe in.”

Beautifully expressed.
