I'm really surprised more people are not using Codeberg for there Git repo.

I am not really a coder and only recently started using Codeberg pages to host my static blog site.

But even I found it easy to use Codeberg, I even became an active financial member so I can support the project.

Why did more projects not look for alternatives when Microsoft bought Github ?

Codeberg doesn't allow you to use the platform for hosting private and personal repositories, which I think keeps a lot of users away. It's primarily for open source projects, but more FOSS projects should definitely be on codeberg rather than github.

that's interesting, as I said I'm not really someone that codes so I rarely use a git forge until now. Why do users have private repo's is it to test code before making it public ?

not everything is made to be public. Things like personal projects and scripts, PoCs etc don't need to be public. Security reasons also of course, another case is if someone is administrating systems with tools like ansible and terraform, they might not want to expose the setup publically because it will make it easier for threat actors to find vulnerabilities.

Please note that most if not all of these use cases allow the creation of private repositories as of our terms of use. Generally, using about 50 MB of storage is usually granted without questions asked.

@Codeberg Is there any possibility, or planned to be, to donate to codeberg to get perks like additional storage exceeding 50mb for private repos?

@alto No, sorry. D:

Offering tiers depending on how much money a user is willing to give would not align with our values or our willingness to keep a nonprofit status. I'd recommend that you install Forgejo on a VPS or something similar instead. ~n
