Als Antwort auf anonymiss • • •The measure of offense is not whether it bothers those for whom it is not an insult, but rather how it perpetuates oppression to those who have been victimized by this word as a taunt.
If the “N-word” does not personally offend you, that does not make it okay for you to use that word, does it?
The software makers were warned about this problem long ago, and they chose to ignore it. That’s a poor reflection of their empathy for others.

methinks it a worse wrong to try to lop off all uses of the word because of one use as an insult.
homonym, yo.
[^ that's the short of it. read on if you dare, for the more personal bit, and then the more challenging bit yet after that (~ or at least see the question in bold, maybe~)].
As one who's been described as a gimp, and do indeed sometimes have a gimpy limp from any of half a dozen ailments, I'm eager to keep the name. Feels incidentally representative. No need here to swoon all offended as victim, creating and doubling the injury, taking it as a pejorative, rather than a descriptive. People calling me a gimp, bothers me far less [(& nothing at all, even)], than being cut off, from support of needs, such as money to survive, or right to a voice...

"nothing about us without us" as the pithy slogan goes.
It's quirky and fun to me. Would so love to alleviate the pain of those taking offence to it, not just to protect my own expression/culture/identity/fun/etc, but to alleviate their suffering, and the suffering of others from their attempts to right the wrong, not realising their "two wrongs". Maybe it helps to entertain the idea, that it's good that rotters reveal themselves with their use of pejorative intended language, so then you know where they are, to avoid or offer better ideas to, rather than force them to fester ever more malignant in their unchallenged bad ideas, ever shifting through more euphemistic dog-whistles, leading to genocides. Speaking as a survivor thereof, again, better we're retaining our free expression, than being culled covertly under euphemisms signalling the mandatory virtues in totalitarian mass formation, not realising those are atrocities, not virtues.
[Fair warning, part way through this next portion, punches are not pulled. Might be too strong for some to read easily. It's not meant to be an easy read. It is challenging to face these things raw. But face them we must {so I assert}, in grace and kindness of due consideration at least.]
So, maybe indeed, offer the preferred named fork, to obsolete the wrongthink named version, and let people decide there with the means to choose, rather than suffer being berated as stupid and evil for not following the one true way and proper newspeak, so then none of us need suffer the derailing from the pertinents. Or maybe there's a compelling argument yet. Maybe we could run as thorough a poll as we can to see if any who are affected by it are offended by it or have fond affection for it, or are utterly indifferent to it. And still then what better solutions, than banning speech. STAMP on that camel's nose the moment it enters the tent, or before we know it, before we can stop it, we'll never be able to express an idea again, as the language truncates in the Orwellian race to the bottom, chasing the true scotsman fallacy. English is a mongrel language, with many an imported patch from other languages, and many a coined term from many a colloquial eccentricity, so there are many homonyms stepping on the toes of their own many meanings... and in terms of language of the oppressor, and words of oppression, "gimp"'s not just milder, but distinct in greater breadth of established homonymity, contrast to stronger words of oppression, such as "nigger", "faggot", or "marijuana". I know of no other use of "nigger", ~ save for the (still problematic) "nigga", and for most, is easily the worst of the monstrous words of oppression, utterly regardless of if mere cultural happenstance, given how sub-human'ising/dehumanising and enslaving and culling and colonising over~ [but I'd still not want evoke the uber-dumb of blanket banning... again, that abuse of censoring a mere word wont stop the abuse behind the word ~ and yes, it is shocking to see that word, as it should be. Lets not book burn history. Face the horror.]. Faggot, would be a weird word to somehow deny people, given it's a common term for sausages, and, was innocent enough to burn, as bundles of wood, rather than bundles of people. Such is the true horror of the etymology of the word "faggot" as a term of abuse and oppression, highlighting the democide, (which similar to "nigga", many have taken as their own, staying strong, never forgetting). Marijuana, distinct again, in that its prior meaning was the means by which it was deployed as a word of oppression, in the intentional misnomer, effectively depriving the majority of humanity of their best resource, enslaving, impoverishing, poisoning, billions of people for generations of this perversion (and so arguably [by the narrowly glimpsed numbers] a worse word of oppression than even "nigger"!), and I do find myself lean to discouraging its use, still vividly injured by this word of oppression. Gimp though, I'm unfamiliar with it as a word of oppression... perhaps you can enlighten me of the etymological history (beyond the shallows offered by dictionary webpages)...? If there is some such horrific history tied to the word (rather than the word being there by happenstance, unless it's really really really bad), I may join in your advocacy of a rename, but it does need be really really really bad, since it's already so widespread established a homonym meaning other things already (other things like GNU Image Manipulation Program) before it's worth embracing that wrong to attempt to correct the wrong. Or at least promoting GLIMPSE (or... a better name. Ew.).
